The exiled prince of the fire nation, he searches to capture the avatar so he can regain his honour.
Zuko is the eldest child of Fire Lord Ozai and Ursa, brother to Princess Azula. Growing up in the capital, he was always distant from his father and closer to his mother, a much more gentle person that his sister. During a meeting with Azulon, Ozai offends his brother Iroh as he is ordered to kill Zuko. Ursa sacrifices herself by going through an unseen plot that allows Ozai to be Lord. Zuko is easily recognized by the characteristic burn scar on the left side of his face given to him by his abusive father, Fire Lord Ozai shortly before his banishment due to an disagreement they had in the war room and during Agni Kai: a firebending duel. On his journey to capture the Avatar, he is assisted by his uncle Iroh in Firebending training.
Zuko is a main character in the Avatar series created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. Avatar: The Last Airbender first began airing on February 21, 2005 on Nickelodeon. While he is the major antagonist for the first season, he evolves as a character as he discovers what he wants in life before fulfilling the role as a firebending master.
His first appearance was in Avatar: The Last Airbender - Episode 1 "The Boy in the Iceberg", and his first comic appearance was in Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Lost Adventures Book 2 CH. 8 "Going Home Again". His character is voiced by Dante Basco, and the Japanese dub is performed by Tomoyoshi Fukazu.
From the beginning, we see the drive to find the Avatar and destroy him from Zuko. It really drives the life and firebending skill inside of him. However, he is changes massively as the series plays out. As his drive to kill the Avatar starts wo wain, he loses his firebending. He comes to find out that firebening is powered by the passion in one's heart, and in the beginning his passion was to kill the Avatar. So he was hurt and confused, but as learns how to love and care for someone, as well as respect, he eventually gets his firebending back and is more powerful than ever.
Zuko's long search for the Avatar eventually led to the south pole, and he found him at the Southern Water Tribe village. The young boy was named Aang, and he surrendered to avoid the civilians being injured. However, he escaped the ship with the help of two water tribe siblings, Katara and Sokka, on Aang's air bison, Appa. The ship was in need of repairs and docked at the port lead by Commander Zhao. Zuko and Iroh tried to hide the existence of the Avatar, but he had secretly interrogated Zuko's crew. Their conflict led to the two engaging in an Agni Kai duel. It was a tough fight, but Zuko won, and was saved by Iroh when Zhao tried striking from behind after the match had ended.
The chase then led to Kyoshi Island. Aang and his friends were being sheltered by the village founded by Avatar Koshi, and Zuko began setting the town on fire to find the Avatar. After a short battle, Aang escaped again on Appa, but also put out the fires using the water blast of the sea monster called the Unagi. The next lead brought Zuko further toward the Earth Kingdom and to one of the Fire Nation Prison Rigs for earthbenders. Though, Aang was gone and had destroyed much of the rig by the time he had arrived. What he did find was the necklace of Katara. Days later, Iroh had been captured by Earth Kingdom soldiers, despite seeing the Avatar's bison. Zuko chose to save his uncle.
While investigating Senlin Village, Zuko learned that the Avatar was headed to Crescent Island, home of the Fire Temple of Avatar Roku. Zuko set a trap with the Fire Sages, and managed to capture Aang before he slipped into the temple's sealed chamber. Aang and his friends escaped the temple with the aid of the spirit of Roku, who destroyed the temple. Zuko had all the Fire Sages arrested.
While Iroh was searching of a white lotus piece for his Pai Sho board, they learned about some pirates who had been robbed of a waterbending scroll by Katara. He hired these pirates to help him capture the Katara, and tempted her with her mother's necklace. She refused, but they still managed to find and capture Aang and Sokka. Though, the pirates betrays Zuko when they learned Aang is the Avatar and wanted to sell him to the Fire Nation for a higher price. Zuko and the pirate captain fought, and Iroh stopped them to reveal Aang and his friends had escaped in the chaos of their infighting.
Zuko and Aang worked together in their adult lives to create Republic City, a center of peace for all four nations. Building and working in the city, the two spent their lives to make it a peaceful place for all citizens of the world. After the death of Aang, the new Avatar is found to be Korra as Zuko has retired from his role as the Fire Lord and has given the title to his daughter, exploring the world as an ambassador of peace.
As the son of the Fire Lord, Zuko is gifted in the art of firebending as most modern firebenders take their power from rage and anger. Always in the shadow of his sister and her skills, Zuko has been shown as a fierce fighter but a much better swordsman, especially with his alter ego The Blue Spirit. When Zuko loses his anger and agrees to teach Aang the art of firebending, he discovers that his power is bare minimal. They decide to find the original source of firebending from the last dragons in the world. Zuko realizes that firebending doesn't come from anger but energy and life itself. He also learns the art of how to manipulate lightning from Iroh and how to redirect it.
In the years after the end of the war, Zuko becomes the Fire Lord as he works with King Kuei to start the Harmony Restoration movement in order to remove Fire Nation colonists back to the Fire Nation. He has Aang promise him that if he were ever to become someone like his father, he wants him to kill him. An assassin tries to take his life as he combats her, returning her to the mayor of Yu Dao. The mayor verbally attacks Zuko as Zuko realizes that Earth Kingdom citizens and Fire Nation colonists have lived in harmony. He tries to rescind the Movement as Aang and Katara attack him. He explains the situation as they agree to hold a summit with Kuei to determine the course of actions.
Zuko appears in all major Avatar video games: The Last Airbender (in a minor role), The Burning Earth, and Into the Inferno where he is a playable character. He also appears at the antagonist in the film adaption of the game The Last Airbender.
Zuko appears in the live action film The Last Airbender as a major antagonist as do the other members of the Fire Nation. Fulfilling his role during the events of Book One, he is portrayed by Dev Patel.
