Van is just an ordinary kid, but his life changes forever when a capsule crashes outside his village and he defends it from bandits. The occupants are a sleek metallic dinosaur and a beautiful girl. The girl, Phina, says that her companion, Jeek, is a zoid. Van sets off with them on an adventure he could never have imagined, a battle against Deathsaura.

Promoting toys is what kids' robot shows are all about; Bandai's Gundam franchise is just one example. Here, though, is a show that starts out with a range of toys that have been on sale since 1982, a motor-driven range of construction kit toys by Tomy, with a name made from a Japlish combination of ju ("beast") and "android," making ju-oids. The artwork has a split personality, using CG on the Zoids (under the supervision of Nobuyoshi Habara) but aiming for a cel-animated look overall. At the beginning of 2001, the series was rebranded as New Century Zoid Slash Zero (Zoid Shinseki/0) with episode 68, moving away from the martial theme of the earlier episodes and concentrating instead on gladiatorial zoid combat. A manga spin-off was serialized in Corocoro Comic.
