Zeke is the puppy that the survivors of Fujimi High rescued along with a young girl named Alice. He proves useful as an early warning system against "Them".

Origin

Zeke is a puppy who was the pet of a lovely young woman in Tokonosu Prefecture. When the city was overrun by the hordes of The (zombies), Zeke's owner went missing and he was alone on the streets. Though he snarls and barks at the undead, they seem to ignore him. It's unknown what his name was before he was adopted by Team Takashi.

The character of Zeke is a supporting character of the manga/anime series Highschool of the Dead that was written by Daisuke Sato and illustrated by Shouji Sato. The series first began serialization in Fujimi Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age magazine in July 2006.

His first appearance was in Hightschool of the Dead Volume 2 CH. 6 "In the Dead of the Night", and his first anime appearance was in Highschool of the Dead - Episode 6 "In the Dead of the Night". His character in the Japanese series is voiced by Hitomi Harada, and the U.S. dub produced by Section 23 is currently not credited and named Zeke as "Zero".

The name of the dog is based on the Mitsubishi A6M Zero (aka Reisen or Zero Fighter), which was a famous Japanese fighter jet during WWII. The jet was designated as the Mitsubishi Navy Type 0 Carrier Fighter (零式艦上戦闘機 rei-shiki-kanjou-sentouki). The official Allied reporting name for this fighter was called "Zeke".

In the Dead of the Night

After losing his master, this dog ran through the streets alone and around the undead humans that filled the streets. He would bark, but they showed little interest in him and he was too fast for them. Walking through the city he was drawn to the houses that still showed lights on. He was drawn by the crying of a little girl named Alice who's father was murdered by other humans. He valiantly defended the child, but was insurmountably outnumbered. A group of high school students appeared just in time, one using a sniper rifle in the distance and another boy who rode up in a motorbike. After helping Alice say goodbye to her father. The teen named Takashi lifted the girl on his back and put the puppy in his shirt to take them both with him. He was forced to walk the thin line of the separator wall to stay away from Them, and were able to meet up with the rest of his friends on a humvee to escape. That night, Kohta Hirano named the puppy Zeke, named after the Reisen fighter jet from WWII. Zeke was now bonded with Alice and hardly ever leaves her side.

Kohta got plenty of seafood and a fire was started. Only later did they realize the leaves they had put into the fire were hydrangea. This caused a hallucination in everyone who breathed in the fumes. Zeke was the one who found the leaves. At the end of the OVA, he's seen collecting more leaves for the future.
