Zechs Marquise is a legendary Mobile Suit pilot from Gundam Wing. He is glorified for his piloting and leadership skills, and he has earned himself the nickname "Lightning Count".
His real name is Milliardo Peacecraft. He is the brother of Relena Peacecraft and the rival of Heero Yuy. Milliardo was originally the heir to the Sanc Kingdom, however the kingdom was destroyed by the United Earth Sphere Alliance in AC 182, and at that point he changed his name to Zechs Merquise and donned his famous white mask. From there he joined the OZ organization in an effort to get revenge, and quickly rose to its top ranks, eventually becoming OZ's number one ace pilot. On the way, he befriends OZ's leader Treize Khushrenada, and he helps Treize by playing a major role in many of his plans, including Operation Daybreak where OZ overthrew the United Earth Sphere Alliance. It is after this that Zechs recieves the OZ-00MS Leo Prototype (also known as the Tallgeese), in an effort to defeat the Gundams using a mobile suit with comparable power.
Previous to Operation Daybreak however, Zechs is sent on a reconnaissance mission looking for mobile weapons sent out from the space colonies in an attempt to stop Operation Meteor (it should be noted that the Operation Meteor that they refer to here is a considerably different plan from the original Operation Meteor). Zechs's patrol spots a mobile suit with incredible power, which they later find out is the Wing Gundam piloted by Heero Yuy. Following Operation Daybreak and the fall of the Earth Sphere Alliance, Zechs faces off with with Heero Yuy in the Wing Gundam again in Siberia. Much to his disgust, he is unable to finish the fight since Heero Yuy self detonates the Wing Gundam after Lady Une threatens the to destroy the space colonies. Desiring to finish their fight, he tries to rebuild the Wing Gundam from its remains, but during it's reconstruction is ordered to destroy it since it posed such a huge threat in the past. Frustrated, he gets Lucrezia Noin to track down Heero and bring him to an OZ base in Antarctica, while meanwhile Zechs rebuilds the destroyed Wing Gundam in secret there so they can finish their dual. In the manga version, Heero uses the rebuilt Wing Gundam when they have their duel, but in the anime Heero uses Trowa Barton's Heavyarms Gundam. In both cases however, the fight is interrupted when Relena arrives at the base in an effort to stop them from fighting. In the process Relena is told by Noin that Zechs is her long lost brother, but both the explanation and the duel are stopped when forces from the Romefellar Foundation arrive at the base, anxious to prove Zechs's disloyalty to the organization.
