Stubborn and ill tempered, Kanda is an exorcist that works for the Black Order. He isn't on friendly terms with most of the other exorcists, claiming that they would just get in his way. He has a sworn promise not to be killed until he finds a certain person.
In the distant past, Kanda was an Exorcist of the Black Order. 30 years before the main timeline of the story, he was killed by an Akuma alongside a fellow exorcist who was like a lover to him.
Upon their deaths, Kanda's corpse and his partner's had their brains removed and preserved at the Asian Branch of the Black Order. They were to be part of the Second Exorcist Program experiment. Two decades later, Kanda was resurrected and he woke up in the Asian Branch Laboratory. The first thing Kanda bore witness to was Alma Karma, who was levitating over Kanda. Alma was also a part of the Second Exorcist Program and he helped Kanda out of his re-birthing pit, then informed Edgar Chang Martin, a senior scientist of the Asian branch of Kanda's awakening.
Kanda was quick to develop a hateful and threatening persona, including towards Alma Karma who continued to try and befriend Kanda. Kanda's condition did not improve. He felt he had no reason to be re-birthed and he had extremely vague memories of his past. He eventually started having hallucinations of a woman he did not know but felt a strong connection with. Every time he would turn to look, she would vanish and Alma would be there instead. Kanda's treatment at the facility was also less than hospitable. He was subjected to tests which involved mutilating his body in order to test the limits of his regenerative power.
Once, when Kanda was in the birthing room of the Second Exorcist Program, he fell into one of the birthing pits. It was Alma again who lifted him out. Alma revealed to Kanda that he also had hallucinations and they were also about a woman, but it was not the same woman that Kanda kept seeing. When Alma innocently teased Kanda, the latter started a fight which resulted in both of them being horribly injured. Seeing their pathetic state caused Kanda to laugh for the first time since his re-birth, and Alma laughed with him.
After a span of months, Kanda and Alma had become what could be considered friends. But their time together was not to last. Kanda's hallucinations worsened to such an extent that it caused physical pain. It was decided that Kanda was too unstable and would be discarded and put down. But Alma learned of this and with Kanda, the two of them made an attempted escape. But they were ambushed by a Black Order group called CROW. Alma decided to take the fall for Kanda and kicked him off a cliff while he stayed behind and delayed CROW.
Despite being humiliated and upset that he had to leave Alma, Kanda continued to attempt to escape. He encountered Noise Marie and Bak Chan. Kanda uncharacteristically asked for them to help him. Marie held him and removed a needle that CROW had shot in him. But then Kanda blacked out, however not before realizing that the scent from Marie was familiar to him. Unfortunately however, Kanda was quickly captured by CROW while unconscious. He awoke and finding himself captured, Kanda laughed maniacally and began asking questions about his past self. He was left unanswered and Saarinzu, one of those tending to him, activated a spell. It channeled an immense amount of electricity through Kanda's body and it temporarily removed his ability to regenerate. The electric charge, subsequently killed Kanda for the second time.
Even after being sent to his grave twice, the Black Order was not done with Kanda yet. They revived Kanda yet again, but this time, they took the preserved innocence from Kanda's original self which was called Mugen and artificially merged it with the newly revived Kanda. It was another torturous trial for Kanda and he clung to life just barely by keeping the image of the woman he kept remembering in his head. But after Kanda's innocence was successfully implanted, things took an unexpected turn for the Black Order. Kanda had finally regained his old memories and using he new found power, Kanda broke out of his shackles and proceeded to escape a second time. Not forgetting the kind actions nor his familiarity of Noise Marie, Kanda searched for him in the facility. He found a wounded Marie in another laboratory. He was sentenced to also become a part of the the Second Exorcist Program like Kanda, presumably for attempting to help Kanda. Kanda released him and unintentionally healed Marie's open wounds when his regenerative blood dripped on Marie. Kanda made his way to where Alma Karma was being kept so that the two of them could realize their dream of escaping together. But when Kanda found Alma, he had also just recently been merged with his former innocence. Kanda found him a midst a number of corpses, those being the staff and scientists of the Asian Branch that Alma had killed. After a brief talk, Kanda realized that Alma had also regained his memories of his past existence, but he was too far gone. Alma would not be reasoned with and he had a twisted idea that he should slaughter everyone in the facility, then Kanda and then himself so that he could die together with Kanda. Though it hurt Kanda to do so, he fought Alma and defeated him, hacking Alma apart to the point that he did not regenerate.
In a twist of fate, Kanda continued to serve under the Black Order under the direct guidance of General Froi Tiedoll. Kanda worked with the Black order for approximately nine years until the start of the main events of the story. It was General Tiedoll who actually gave Kanda the name surname Kanda as he was only known as Yuu before, and Kanda went by that name thereafter.
Kanda is one of the main protagonists created by Hoshino Katsura for the series D. Gray Man. Kanda's relevance and time in the story is nearly equal to Allen Walker's who is in fact the main character and more than once, the story has revolved around Kanda more than Allen.
Kanda has had turning points in his life, not the least of which is his constant increase in power and fighting prowess. He has largely overcome an extremely traumatic past and gradually is becoming more "human", which he did not even consider himself in the past.
Kanda is a young man of fair height and a lean build. He has pale skin and is noted as having very handsome features but a cold face. He has long dark blue hair that he always wears in a pony-tail. He usually is seen in a standard exorcist uniform. In terms of Age Kanda is rather strange. He could be considered much older or younger than he looks depending on perspective. He was a young man 30 years before the main story but died. Some of his essence however was preserved and grown into a new body. Physically he is actually only 9 years old but his brain and essence are well over 30 years old. His body is chronologically 19 in terms of development.
Kanda has a rather unpleasant personality. This is likely derived from his troubled past as an experimental Accommodator. He is always rude no matter who he is addressing and is not sympathetic to those who he directly or indirectly affects. He has a sense of justice and has admitted he has feelings for some individuals, namely Alma Karma, Lenalee Lee and to a lesser extent Allen Walker. However this does not alter his general attitude. He can be ruthless and merciless but is not evil to his core.
Kanda was summoned to the entrance of the European Branch of the Black order in order to deal with the "disguised Akuma" who was trying to gain entrance. It was actually Allen Walker, a disciple of General Cross who had arrived to join the branch, but because of his unusual appearance, he was mistaken for an Akuma. Allen attacked Allen and a short scuffle ensued until Lenalee Lee, arrived and cleared the misunderstanding. Komui Lee, the Branch Chief had forgotten and lost Allen's Letter of introduction that was sent ahead of him by General Cross. He had remembered upon hearing of Allen's arrival. Even though Allen was not at fault, Kanda did not apologize and turned a cold shoulder to Allen who tried to break the awkwardness.
A short time later, inside the European Branch, Kanda finds himself butting heads with the newly arrived Allen Walker for a second time already. After making snide and patronizing remarks about the Finders of the Order, Allen argued with Kanda in their defense. Allen grabbed Kanda's arm and Kanda continuously threw insults at Allen until they finally ended their scuffle. To both of their dismay, they were assigned a mission together. It was to be Allen's first mission as a part of the Black Order and the objective was to retrieve a piece of innocence that was said to be in Mater. Finder Toma, who Kanda had also indirectly insulted was assigned to join the two exorcists as well. The trio boarded a train and headed for Italy, which was where the Ghost of Mater was reported to be. During their train ride, Allen inquired about the mission. Kanda was annoyed but answered accordingly.
When the trio arrived at Mater, Kanda made it clear that he did not intend to work with Allen nor help him. He then went after the Doll that housed the innocence while Allen fought the Akuma Perriot. Kanda found a nearly dead Finder but managed to get the necessary information to unlock the talismans to get inside the place that the Ghost was hiding. Allen found and essentially held hostage Lala and Guzol, the latter of whom was believed to be the doll housing the innocence. Kanda proceeded with Lala and Guzol and had them lead him through underground passageways to avoid the Akuma Perriot. Guzol came out and said that he was the doll that Kanda was looking for. Kanda said that for the sake of ease, he would take the innocence from Guzol, but the process would end the doll's artificial life. Knowing this, Lala got in the way and said if Kanda were to kill Guzol now, they would never get out of the underground passageway. Suddenly, Finder Toma caught up to them, holding Allen's golem Timcanpy. It had a holographic recording on it showing the abilities of the Akuma. However, while Kanda and Toma were distracted by the recording, Lala and Guzol took that chance and fled. And angry Kanda prepared to re-capture them but at that moment, Allen arrived.
But Kanda was not fooled. Despite the perfect replication of Allen's appearance, the person before him was not Allen. Kanda assumed it was the Akuma which had the ability of mimicry and was about to slay the fake Allen, when the real Allen moved the Fake Allen out of the way. Allen revealed that the Fake Allen was actually Toma who was being controlled. Kanda realized the situation but was not fast enough. The "Toma" he had been with all along attacked and badly wounded him, revealing itself to be the real Akuma.
Kanda was bleeding profusely, as the Akuma mocked him, then his consciousness slipped away while he still stood. But Allen knocked away Perriot and carried Kanda away. They managed to catch up to Lala and Guzol. It was then that Lala confessed that she not Guzol was in fact the doll housing the innocence and that she and Guzol had been lone companions for decades. But now Guzol was old and dying while she being a doll had not aged. Kanda had regained consciousness and told Allen to take the innocence from Lala right away so they could finish the mission and leave. Allen told Kanda he could not do that. Although wounded, an angry Kanda stood up, throwing Allen's jacket back at him which Allen had removed so Kanda could use it as a pillow. Kanda said that sacrifices were necessary in order for greater good and rushed at Lala with Mugen. But Allen blocked him. He told Kanda that when Guzol died, he would take the innocence then. Kanda angrily struck Allen but at that moment, Perriot arrived, having found them now. IT proceeded to tear out the innocence from Lala anyway then dealt a fatal blow to Guzol. Allen entered into an enraged state and his Innocence weapon cross began evolving on the spot. But the strain was too much. Kanda steps in, insulting Allen for his weakness. The weakened duo for the first time combined their power into a giant blast of innocence and eliminated Perriot.
After three days, Kanda called Komui Lee, the Chief of their Black Order Branch from the hospital and informed him on the status of their mission. He told Komui that Allen after 3 days had not left Lala and Guzol because he was waiting for Guzol to pass peacefully with Lala by his side. After discharging himself from the hospital, Kanda went back to the still waiting Allen and told him he was leaving for his next mission. Kanda confused at Allen, asked why he would not simply end the mission. Allen told Kanda it was not for him to do. Moments later, Lala stopped singing and dropped over Guzol's corpse. Allen finally went and took the innocence and told Kanda that he would be a destroyer that saved not killed.
When the news of General Kevin Yeagar's death by the hand of the Noah family had reached the Black Order, Kanda and his old comrade Noise Marie along with a young exorcist named Daisya Barry were sent immediately to locate General Froi Tiedoll. As they searched, they encountered several Akuma who made it clear that they knew the intentions of Kanda's group and that they would not reach General Tiedoll in time. Marie and Daisya try to lighten the mood by saying that General Tiedoll was probably drawing somewhere without being in any kind of danger. But Kanda told them to shut up. Kanda's comrades knew that Kanda was in a particularly bad mood because General Tiedoll was one of the few people he actually cared about and wouldn't admit it.
The trio continued on with their search. They split up to search separately and agreed on a rendezvous point. They could communicate back and forth with Daisya because of his golem. But after some time, Kanda heard an unfamiliar voice coming from the golem. It was in fact the Noah Family member Tyki Mikk who had engaged Daisya in combat and subsequently defeated him. Kanda and Marie did not know that what they heard of Daisya's voice were the last words he would ever utter. When Kanda and Daisya meet at the agreed place, the were unpleasantly surprised to only find Daisya's golem there.
However, the mission was not a failure. A short time later, Kanda and Marie found General Tiedoll. They were pleased to see their old master but broke the unfortunate news of Daisya's death to him. Kanda asked General Tiedoll to accompany them back to headquarters, but Tiedoll said that he could not, since his duty to find more Accommodators was never more important than now. Kanda and Marie agreed to go with him instead.
The now formed trio of exorcists continued their journey and made their way to Edo, the Capital of Japan. Coincidentally, the group of exorcists on a mission similar to Kanda's were already there. Their mission was also to locate one of the Generals of the Black Order, Cross Marian. But they had yet to succeed. The group consisted of Lenalee Lee, Lavi, Bookman, Miranda Lotto and Arystar Krory, Kanda's own allies from the European Branch. When Kanda's group arrived at Edo, their fellow exorcists were engaged in battle against an Army of Akuma and members of the Noah Family. Kanda and Marie immediately jumped into the fray to aid their battle worn allies. The duo teamed up and took down one of the Giant Akuma, which were Legions of level 3 Akuma combined into one. With the reinforcements, the Exorcists began getting the upper hand. The Earl of Millenium, head of the Noah and creator of the Akuma, finally grew impatient and nonchalantly leveled the entire city. Though the exorcists survived the attack, they were all blown away and were separated. The severely weakened Lenalee was no longer able to activate her innocence and was helpless. The Earl took the chance to personally kill her as the helpless Kanda was held back by Tyki Mikk. But as the Earl brought his sword down, he was parried. It was none other than Allen Walker who was believed to be dead and he had arrived by a dimensional gate from the Noah's Ark. After a short scuffle, the Earl decided on a tactical retreat. Kanda accidentally attacked Allen when Tyki moved out of the way as he was retreating. The re-united "allies" began their typical bickering and threat throwing. General Tiedoll then stepped forward and informed everyone of what was going on and they devised a strategy.
Suddenly, Lenalee is sucked away into a portal. Most everyone present lunged after her and managed to enter the portal before it closed. When they arrived at their destination, they find themselves inside of Noah's Ark. They are met by Tyki who offers them the key to exiting the Ark since it was set to collapse shortly and kill everyone inside. He threw the key at the exorcists which Kanda caught and invited them to participate in a game.
The group decide to press on and use the key to escape. By using the key, they opened the door in front of them. On the other side waiting for them, was Skin Boric, a member of the Noah Family. Kanda decided that he would deal with Skin and the rest should continue without delay. Despite initial refusal to leave Kanda alone, Kanda attacked his fellow exorcists which made them reconsider their position. They decided to go on as advised and Kanda stayed behind to fight.
Kanda and Skin introduce themselves to one another then commenced their battle. Kanda noticed Skin's particularly high durability and his cuts with Mugen were not getting through. Skin told Kanda that attacking him was risky since touching him meant that his power would enter Kanda's own body. Kanda paid no heed to this and continued his assault. Skin then proved his point and extracted chains from Kanda's own body, causing gruesome wounds on the latter's body. But neither slowed down. In fact the battle became more heated as the ark continued to collapse around them. It was a race to win since anyone inside would die as soon as the Ark collapsed fully. Kanda's tattoo's began to alter, a sign that he was using more power.
Skin noticed that his skin was starting to singe. It was because Kanda was attacking him with such intensity that Mugen had begun to melt. It had permeated Skin's body and Kanda's innocence had leaked inside, which was the one particular vulnerability that all the Noah shared. While Skin was getting harmed for the first time, Kanda had actually regenerated the damage he had sustained. Thinking he had won, Kanda proceeded to the door to follow after his comrades. But Skin was not defeated. In fact his inner Noah had awakened in response to the innocence entering his body and was not stronger than before. This worried Kanda as his Mugen was now full of holes and the enemy was even stronger than before. Kanda used his life force to strengthen Mugen but it would weaken him in the long run. It also proved ineffective as Skin's attack was so powerful that it broke Mugen in one go. Simultaneously, the ground underneath Kanda reformed into spikes and impaled him. It was a side effect of Skin's attack. Skin bellowed with laughter for his victory, but he had made the same mistake that Kanda made earlier. Kanda too was not quite finished. He commanded Mugen to absorb all of the broken pieces of itself. Now reformed fully and enhanced with Kanda's life force, the off guard Skin was open and was subsequently, sliced in half. Skin's remains turned into ash and the victory was Kanda's. But Kanda looked up and saw the door collapse and Kanda realized that it was too late for him to escape.
But Kanda's death was averted when Allen Walker reached the piano room, which was in fact the control room of the Ark. After playing the piano, Allen stabilized the Ark and averted it's collapse, saving Kanda and everyone inside the Ark. Kanda woke up, not sure of what had just transpired. Kanda and his allies convened and searched for aa way out. Allen's group was successful in not only stopping the ark's destruction and claiming it for themselves, but finding General Cross Marian who had also come to aid them. Everyone returned to the European Branch and Kanda and mos of their party are taken to the infirmary, which Kanda comically tried to escape repeatedly due to Krory's snoring, but was caught each time and taken back.
After recuperating sufficiently, Kanda left the Medic Ward to go mediate alone. But he is soon joined by Lenalee. Lenalee claimed she was also there to meditate, but Kanda told Lenalee that she always came to him whenever Malcolm C. Leverrier visited. Lenalee began to argue that such was not the case, but Kanda silenced her and said that he believed that she was a strong woman.
After a short time, the Noah Lulu Bell invaded the Order. Her primary goal was to recover the Akuma Egg that the Ecorcists had taken from the Noah. Mugen was still in disrepair so Kanda searched for normal swords. After gathering several of them, he rushed to Komui Lee to protect him from the Akuma who accompanied Lulu Bell, not the least of which was the horrific Level 4 Akuma who also came. Komui insisted that Kanda protect himself and evacuate in his current state but Kanda refused. Soon Kanda is joined by Lavi and both weaponless exorcists attempted to protect Komui Lee. They were defeated anyway. Komui was flustered as to what he should do, but Kanda kicks him away, telling him to join his sister Lenalee. The weakened Kanda and Lavi join the also weakened Allen to do their best at aiding him against the terribly powerful level 4 Akuma, but yet again, Kanda and Lavi were decommissioned.
But hope was not lost. In the desperation of the situation, not only did Lenelee finally reawaken her damaged innocence, but the 4 Generals of the Order, who were considered the strongest exorcists stepped in. The Level 4 Akuma was troublesomely but totally defeated and Lulu Bell failed to retrieve the Akuma Egg after Miranda froze it in time and Allen shattered it. It was yet another victory for the Black Order.
Kanda could be considered virtually immortal to conventional damage. He can revive himself from "death" after a span of just under 10 minutes. He can regrow lost appendages presumably aside from his head, but he has even survived having his head crushed. He is even immune to the effects of Akuma blood given his numerous modifications.
Kanda is considerably stronger than a normal human in all areas of physicality, most notably speed. He appears to be the fastest out of the exorcists seen and moves fast enough to almost appear as though he vanishes. His strength is as such where he can effortlessly slice though solid stone slabs several feet thick. His agility is also enhanced. He can leap several meters into the air or use walls like a floor in that he can launch himself from them as easily as he would the ground.
Kanda's only weapon of choice is a single Katana called Mugen. He has immense proficiency with the blade, probably greater than Allen's skill with the broadsword.
Kanda's Innocence Weapon. It appears as a simple Katana, but it has extraordinary durability and cutting power. Although not indestructible, Kanda can order Mugen to reforge itself even after being shattered. Kanda can also channel his own life force into Mugen to augment it's cutting power and hardness.
After Mugen was broken by Skin Boric, Kanda received a new version of Mugen.
