Double ring out!

As you might’ve surmised, I don’t precisely know what to expect from “the Dark Tournament.” Well, I can make a healthy guess based on the premise put forth so far, but I honestly can’t say how long this arc is going to run for because, with nearly 100 episodes left until the series finale, there’s certainly a lot of breathing room available.

Will it actually devote every episode to every individual bout in every individual tier in this entire 5X5 bracket? If so, then this show may very well the “great white” of stories about big, epic martial tournaments. Where all other stories have to skip over a lot of fights with montages in the name of conciseness, YU YU HAKUSHO may actually present every single step on the way.

And if that does prove to be the case, there’s something so very pure and beautiful about that.

Considering how, among other things, Kurama’s signature weapon is a freaking rose, I’m starting to view the guy as the romantic love interest of shojo series who’s inexplicably wandered into this shonen fight show. It’s a fun thought to entertain, because even when the guy’s pulling a fatality on the evil ferret man he squares off against in this episode, he’s doing it with the sort of passion that seems a world away from Yusuke’s temperament. Hell, it’s a world away from Kuwabara, even when the guy’s such a hopeless romantic. It honestly makes me think of that TSUBASA show that was pulling all the alternate realities together for one story.

You lunatic have told me how there’s plenty of slash fanart depicting him and Hiei in assorted tender embraces and, while there really isn’t much sexual tension between the two in the actual show, per it really isn’t that much of a stretch, per se. The fox guy fights, sure, but he’s still more of a LOVER.

Look up this episode, "Flowers of Blood" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Kurama comes from the Tuxedo Mask school of character design, which fits right in with your shojo comparison.

The best part about Kurama is really watching his character move beyond that in this whole arc and subsequent ones. He always remains the pretty boy with the rose, but so devious and cunning underneath the surface.

Yeah, maybe if you had stopped watching I wouldn't constantly be reminded, but I guess I should watch this again. It's been...I don't know, a year? It's my favorite long running action series I've seen for sure.

^^Ya, as the show continues you get the sense that Kurama is the LAST of the Yu Fighters that you'd want to piss off.

@Tom_Pinchuk:

lol, dont worry Tom, I cant spoil anything but there's far more to the Dark Tournament than just the tournament. Also, if you're going to do the whole saga you might want to think about breaking it up. Maybe do episodes in chunks instead of single episodes. Less chance of you grasping at straws, and you'll also get better quality in your write-ups due to more material.

Kurama, the most ruthless and powerful good guy in this show, atleast until the end of this arc.

They pair the two (Kurama and Hiei) together a lot in Yaoi fiction since they're both Yokai in the series. And heck, let's not forget that Ogata Megumi was voicing Kurama so there's going to be a bit of a feminine side to him.

It's all good though through the Dark Tournament. Enjoy yourself because things get heavy.

Agreed. And just so you know, in my opinion at least, the fights against the next team are pretty boring, but important to set the stage for the following fight and to develop the Masked Fighter's character.

I think you'll have more to say about them as a whole.

Oh, and episode 30 is one of the best Hiei fights ever.
