Yu Narukami is a recent transfer student to Inaba that discovers himself embroiled in a supernatural murder mystery, and has the power to summon a being called a Persona. He's the appointed leader of the Investigation Team.
Yu Narukami was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1994. His parents both work very demanding jobs and as a result, he constantly had to transfer schools throughout his childhood. Over time, be became a bit of a loner but still respectful to other people. In 2011, his parents went to work abroad and sends Yu to his mother's hometown of Inaba to live with his uncle Ryotaro Dojima and his cousin Nanako. Ryotaro, his mother's brother, takes in Yu with pleasure as he soon attends Yasogami High School in Class 2-2 led by Kinshiro Morooka.
Yu Narukami is the main character from the Shin Megami Tensei series of games and specifically the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 video game for the Playstation 2 . It's the sixth game of the franchise and was developed as a murder mystery RPG with deep social aspects. It was developed by ATLUS in Japan, directed by Katsuro Hashino , and character design by Shigenori Soejima . It was released in Japan in July 10, 2008, and in the U.S. on December 9, 2008.
The series was later adapted into a manga written and illustrated by Shuji Sogabe, and began serialization in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Black Maoh magazine on September 19, 2008. The anime adaption began in October of 2011 and is directed by Seiji Kishi. In the manga the protagonist's official name was Souji Seta, but it was changed to Yu Narukami in the anime adaptation, and has stayed that way since.
His first manga appearance was in Persona 4 Volume 1 CH. 1 "Opening", and his first anime appearance was in Persona 4 - Episode 1 "You're myself, I'm yourself". His character in the Japanese series is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa, and the U.S. dub has not been announced.
Yu, along with the rest of the Investigation Team members, appears briefly in Chapter 1 of the manga during the introduction pages for the series.

Yu is able to utilize the power of the Fool and the World Arcana with the power of Izanagi. However, as a member of the Fool Arcana, Yu has the ability to switch Personas and their abilities. When the Fool and World Social Links become maxed out, his persona evolves into Izanagi no Ookami. His main powers include physical and lightning based attacks, but his abilities vary with each Persona he has.

Yu uses two handed blades in combat. They range from katanas to broad swords and even a golf club as his starting weapon.
Yu is the protagonist in the Sony Playstation 2 video game Persona 4, where he first appeared. He becomes fast friends with most people in Inaba as well as he becomes the leader of the Investigation Team per the request of everyone else. He's voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in the Japanese version and Johnny Yong Bosch in the English version, albeit he barely speaks in the game.
Yu also appears in Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena (a.k.a. "Persona 4 Arena" or just "P4A") for the Microsoft XBOX 360 and Sony Playstation 3 systems as a pivotal character.
Returning to Inaba a couple years after the events of the Persona 4 game, Yu planned to hang out with his friends from before. Shortly after his arrival, Yu was shocked to discover that the Midnight Channel has returned, displaying the arrival of a "Grand Prix" fighting tournament including himself and the other members of the Investigation Team, and being organized by Teddie. After quickly organizing the members of his team that he could find, Yu went back into the TV world to deal with this new mystery.
