While attempting to find a quiet place to study, Haruhi stumbles upon Music Room #3-- where the six-member Host Club entertains female students (for a price). The club was founded by its president (or King), Tamaki Suou, who flirts with Haruhi. Attempting to get away, Haruhi accidentally knocks over a vase that the host club was planning to sell for a fundraiser-- worth about $80,000 USD ( ¥8,000,000). Tamaki declares Haruhi to be the club's errand-boy to pay for the vase.
However, after one particular event leads Tamaki to remove Haruhi's glasses, the expressive eyes behind them cause Tamaki and the twins, Hikaru and Kaoru, to give Haruhi a makeover. Haruhi becomes the club's first "natural" host, whose sincerity attracts the Host Club attendees.
Shortly thereafter, the other hosts finally start to realize that Haruhi has one downside as a host: Haruhi is actually a girl.
