Yoko asks Kamina to go with her to help hunt down some food, and Kamina also has Simon tag along, to Yoko's slight disappointment. Yoko tells the boys that her village used to be a weapons storehouse and that she's the best marksman there, so she gets her special sniper rifle. She lets Kamina use the rifle and he hits a bird-like creature, only to find someone else hit it with an arrow first. The first shooter attacks him.

Kamina defends against the attack and the shooter, a Beastman, introduces himself as Viral. The two begin facing off in hand-to-hand combat, but Simon interferes with the Lagann and Yoko with her rifle, leading Viral to head back to his ganmen. Kamina boards the Gurren and the two fight with their ganmen. Simon and Kamina are unable to defeat Viral, but they do hold him off, and he swears to come by the next day to kill them.

Simon expresses his fears about piloting the Lagann to Kamina, saying that he's worried that Kamina will die like his father and saying that he always just wants to run away. Kamina encourages Simon. Yoko, who overheard the conversation, privately asks Kamina to let her pilot the Lagann because Simon might just run away, but Kamina defends Simon.

The next morning, Kamina awaits Viral while Simon has difficulty starting up the Lagann. Viral appears in his ganmen, the Enki, and he starts beating up the Gurren. Yoko yells at Simon, saying that Kamina will just get beat up waiting for Simon to appear. Simon is able to start up the Lagann and joins the fray, and Simon grabs the Gurren and attempts to combine the two mechs by slamming the Gurren on top of the Lagann. At first it looks like nothing happened, but then the two mechs really do perform a union, becoming the Gurren-Lagann.

The two fight Viral's Enki and even steal its helmet, and Viral eventually flees. Kamina wants to follow but Simon tells him that the Gurren is pretty damaged, so they should wait. Kamina says Simon will probably save him by saying things like that. Yoko apologizes to Simon. While repairing the Gurren, Leeron discovers that it has return data that could help the group find the home of the Beastmen, creating the possibility of a preemptive attack for once. Simon, Kamina, Leeron, and Yoko decide to find the place, and leave the village.
