1950- . Born in Yokohama, he found work with Mushi Production after leaving high school. With the demise of Mushi in 1973, he was one of the early employees of Madhouse, and had his directorial debut with Lensman (1984). His Wicked City was upgraded to full-length movie status after initial commission as a 35-minute video, leading to Kawajiri's association with several other adaptations of the work of novelist Hideyuki Kikuchi. Kawajiri was the most conspicuous proponent of the "urban gothic" style that characterized many of the most successful anime abroad in the 1990s (such as Cyber City Oedo 808 and Demon City Shinjuku) and also with the fast cutting of Ninja Scroll. A combination of these influences is thought to have led to his commission to provide one of the works in The Animatrix.
