After the Spiral King was defeated, guileless Yoko chose to avoid politics and did not join the new government. She sought to distance herself from her warrior past and moved to a small village on remote Koreha Island, taking the name Yomako. There she pursued a career as a primary-education teacher. But when she learned Simon had been unjustly imprisoned -- the result of a corrupt politician's power-play at the capital city -- she immediately took up arms once more and broke Simon, Boota and Viral out of jail. She then joined Simon in defeating the Anti-Spirals. Yoko then went back to teaching on Koreha Island and later became the school's principal.
In this spin-off manga, everything takes place in and around a high school. Yoko was a childhood friend of Simon's and was a fellow student at the high school. She was very protective of him, especially when Kamina tried dragging him into fights and other reckless adventures. Yoko had a somewhat acrimonious relationship with Kamina, who constantly belittled her. She carried a long sword, which she used to great effect in a show-down fight with Adiane the Elegant, causing that antagonist to concede.

Yoko was born underground but moved up to the surface of the planet, where she became part of a resistance movement against Beastmen. At war's end, Yoko became a teacher and later a school principal.
History
Yoko was born in a subterranean village, which later was moved back to the war-torn planet's surface due to a poison-gas leak from a nearby underground ammunition dump. Yoko became an expert marksman and an experienced warrior at an early age, through participation in combat patrols defending her village. She saved the lives of Kamina, Simon and many villagers when a Gunmen she'd been tracking crashed into Jeeha village and she single-handedly attacked and disabled it -- giving everyone time to escape to safety. Yoko was one of the three original members of the Gurren-dan and played an instrumental role in the defeat of the Spiral King. Personality
Yoko was an altruistic and determined young woman with considerable circumspection, common sense and maturity. Although serious and single-minded when it came to combat and soldiering, Yoko was affable and light-hearted when no danger of enemy attack was present. She was also an intelligent and cool-headed battle tactician whose sound advice Kamina disregarded once too often, a decision which cost him his life. Previously, Yoko had fallen in love with Kamina and he had seemed to return her feelings. She mourned deeply for him and suffered severe depression, yet put on a brave face to console her friend Simon. Nia Teppelin appeared just then and attracted considerable attention, so much so that Yoko in her weakened emotional state felt abandoned by her friends.Gurren Lagann: School Version
