Yoko is one of the three main characters in the cast. She has long red hair, a curvy body, and looks far more mature for her age. She often wears skimpy and revealing despite her bashful personality. Throughout the Gurren Lagann's twenty-seven episode run, Yoko has a more maturing body and progressively revealing outfits to match. She believes that wearing too much clothing makes it difficult to fight. She initially wears a bikini top, short shorts, long stockings, and boots. Despite her being only slightly older than Simon, her body type makes her appear older. She is the more rational character between Kamina and Simon and serves as their voice of reason to their extravagant behavior.

Her weapon of choice is a long electromagnetic rifle that can use a variety of ammo types. She also temporarily pilots the Gurren model Gunmen.

Yoko is often the source of much of the fanservice in the anime and is one of the icons of the popular anime concept that was dubbed by the fans as the Gainax Bounce. Her breasts tend to bounce as she talks and the protagonist Simon will accidentally land face first between them. Every character that has ever kissed Yoko has died within the same episode. This earned the title of "Kiss of Death" among the series fans.

Beast War Era

She teamed up with Simon and Kamina who would gather more humans together to form the Team Dai-Gurren to push back against the beastmen. Though flirtatious with Simon, she falls in love with Kamina and takes the tragedy of his death hard. After the the war with the Beastmen, Yoko avoided being part of the politics of Kamina City. She would leave to become a teacher on a small island under the pseudonym Yomako.

Anti-Spiral War Era

Yoko would return to the battle when her island home was attacked and one of her students taken hostage. She would reveal a new outfit that was similar to her original one, but with a jacket and her stockings and boots were replaced with long boots. She left her peaceful teaching life behind to find team up with Kittan in order to rescue Simon from prison.

Later in the Anit-Spiral War Arc, Yoko has her most revealing outfit to date. A mostly white design of skintight pants, a small tube top adorned with large stars covering her breasts, and a cape with a gap in the rear exposing her butt.

Major Story Arcs

Yoko was born in a subterranean village, which later was moved back to the war-torn planet's surface due to a poison-gas leak from a nearby underground ammunition dump. Yoko became an expert marksman and an experienced warrior at an early age, through participation in combat patrols defending her village. She saved the lives of Kamina, Simon and many villagers when a Gunmen she'd been tracking crashed into Jeeha village and she single-handedly attacked and disabled it -- giving everyone time to escape to safety. Yoko was one of the three original members of the Gurren-dan and played an instrumental role in the defeat of the Spiral King. She was also a constant counselor and friend to Simon.

After the Spiral King was defeated, guileless Yoko chose to avoid politics and did not join the new government. She sought to distance herself from her warrior past and moved to a small village on remote Koreha Island, taking the name Yomako. There she pursued a career as a primary-education teacher. But when she learned Simon had been unjustly imprisoned -- the result of a corrupt politician's power-play at the capital city -- she immediately took up arms once more and broke Simon, Boota and Viral out of jail. She then joined Simon in defeating the Anti-Spirals. Yoko then went back to teaching on Koreha Island and later became the school's principal.

In this spin-off manga, everything takes place in and around a high school. Yoko was a childhood friend of Simon's and was a fellow student at the high school. She was very protective of him, especially when Kamina tried dragging him into fights and other reckless adventures. Yoko had a somewhat acrimonious relationship with Kamina, who constantly belittled her. She carried a long sword, which she used to great effect in a show-down fight with Adiane the Elegant, causing that antagonist to concede.
