Yoichi Hiruma is a violent football player who plays for the Deimon high Devil Bats. A team that he created himself with hopes of going to the Christmas bowl.
Hiruma was a young boy, only ten years old, when he first started to like football. While now he is known for his violent tendencies, back until he started playing he was rather laid back and unenthusiastic towards most things. While he was out one day he saw an American army base. He went down and looked around it to find troops playing football. He instantly found the game interesting so he went back and started to study the sport. He became better and better at it and learned about all the positions and plays. The men on the base started to enjoy his company and sort of adopted him as one of their own. Through them he learned to love football, gambling (which he had a natural talent for), and guns. He continued going to visit the base each week for awhile including when he reached Mao middle school. This is when Hiruma first changes his look by making his hair blond.
When he began middle school he found Ryokan Kurita, a large student who was begging people to join the American Football team. Hiruma had no interest in joining an actual team and preferred his life of solitude. However one day Ryokan found him up on the roof making football plays in a notebook. Ryokan begged him to join the team but he didn't want to so he just left, but Ryokan followed him wherever he went. He followed him to Hiruma's "home," a hotel room Hiruma had conned the hotel into giving him year round for free. He explained that he only liked football for gambling, but one day when he saw that Ryokan was being forced by the school to give up on the football club, Hiruma couldn't take it and he gambled all his money he had made on the Red Team at the army base. The quarterback and center passed out from heatstroke and a replacement was needed, so Hiruma and Ryokan stepped onto the field for the first time. They lost, but Hiruma then promised that when they made their team they would never lose.
They established their team and started recruiting people, but the school told them they were forbidden from making one because of noise complaints and they didn't want to spend the money on a team. So Hiruma decided that in order to make the team, first he had to make a threat notebook. Hiruma took a box of cell phones that had been thrown away for recycling because he knew that the cameras still worked in them. He set them up around the city to gather information on people. He used this info to start a team and he convinced Musashi to join the team by helping out at his construction sites. Musashi thought they seemed fun, so he decided to join, and these three friends started to dream of one day going to the Christmas Bowl.
With this dream in mind, they started working with Hiruma's other associate, Agon, and tried to get into Shinryuuji to join the Nagas. They wanted to join because this was a school that had a history of going to the Christmas Bowl. However, they couldn't because Ryokan wasn't smart enough to get into the school, and there was only one Sports Scholarship available, which Agon himself got. So HIruma and Musashi rejected the school, refusing to leave their friend behind, so they went to Deimon, and thus the Deimon Devil Bats were born. In their first season they lost horribly to the White Knights, but they refused to give up even though at this school seniors were prohibited from playing sports, so this next season would be their last chance to make their dream come true.
Yoichi Hiruma is created by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. Yoichi is voiced by Atsushi Tamura in the anime series while Shinichiro Miki voiced him in the movie.
As the next school year came along Hiruma resorted to his old habits of trying to drag people into the team by threatening them but it had the same luck as last year. But then he stumbled across Sena Kobayakawa and saw him breaking out his incredible speed to escape some bullies. He instantly realized he was destined to be their running back.
Realizing that if anyone saw Sena's speed then all the other clubs would be after him to beg him to join, he made Sena wear an eyeshield over his eyes to hide his identity. This is outlawed by the league, but Hiruma faked a note from a doctor (or threatened one to write it) to say it was okay for him to wear it. When the new season started Hiruma forced Sena into a game against the Cupids after they got behind by one field goal. Sena scored a touchdown but when Mamori showed up looking for Sena she found him after he had changed out of his clothes, rather roughed up, and she blamed Hiruma for doing it. She demanded that he leave the team but Sena wanted to stay, so she joined the team as a manager. Hiruma quized her on football rules to prove if she was worth joining and she passed with flying colors, much to his dismay.
Their second game was against the Ojo White Knights and despite best efforts the Devil Bats lost, but Hiruma revealed that this was just the Spring practice season, the real games, the ones leading up to the Christmas Bowl, were taking place in the fall. So Hiruma convinced Raimon to join the team because of his great catching skills, and with that they won their next game. Because of this the Devil Bats became a break out success and people were lining up to join. So to sort them out he set up a challenge in Tokyo Tower where they had to run up to the top with ice and keep it from melting by the time they got to the top. Hiruma set up a series of traps, including a room on fire and him shooting at anyone trying to make their way up. By the end of it Daikichi, Koji, Shozo, Kazuki, and Yukimitsu joined the team. Yukimitsu however, being very frail and weak, barely made it to the top and when he arrived the ice had melted in his cup, so when no one was looking Hiruma slipped a drop of ice into his cup so he could join.
HIruma challenged the American team, the Aliens, to a game, even sending them a mocking video to spur their anger enough to bring them to Japan. He wagered with them that if the Devil Bats won then the Aliens could never return to America, and if the Aliens won then the Devil Bats would leave Japan. They ended up losing, but this was all part of Hiruma's plan, he had been looking for an excuse to leave for America in the first place so that he could find his old coach Doburoku Sakaki, who had left Japan when his gambling debts became too high.
They find him, as well as the Seibu Wild Gunmen, and Hiruma tells Doburoku that if he comes back with him then they will pay off all his gambling losses. He agrees, but first he must train the Devil Bats here in America. He says the only way they can get stronger in time for the game it to take on the Death March, a legendary stretch of road from Houston to Las Vegas that is said to be impossible to walk. The Devil Bats had to run this stretch of land, which Hiruma encouraged them to do by running behind them shooting at them the entire time and shouting out plays to quiz them. When they finally reached their destination Hiruma seemed fine unlike the rest of them, but the moment he was alone he passed out, half dead and beaten. Only one thing was left to do, which was to win the money needed to pay of Doburoku's debts, and what better place to do this in than in Las Vegas. Hiruma used his brilliant mind to count cards and won the money in no time, and with that the Devil Bats were on their way back to America.
Upon returning to Japan, the fall season began and the Devil Bats were ready to make their way to the Christmas Bowl. Their first match was against the Cyborgs who had studied the Devil Bats and seen all their weaknesses, but they had no idea how much stronger they had become once they were done with their training, and the Devil Bats won their match easily. After this they had a string of easy wins, including against the Scorpions, whose captain was Sasuke Kanagushi, a man who believed he knew everything about reading the other team's moves, however Hiruma taught him that he was still a long way from actually going toe to toe with his level of deception. He used tricks like painting his teams fingers red to make it look like they were leaning forward before the hike, implying they would rush forward, but actually they were going to move back. It was strategies like this that won their team a string of matches.
This winning spree continued until they faced off against the Seibu Wild Gunmen, where they faced their first real challenge. They were being beaten steadily until Musashi showed back up to join the team. Feeling reinvigorated Hiruma broke out his Devil Laser Bullet, a special deadly pass that has speed greater than anyone had ever seen. It was here that Hiruma found a rival in Shien Mushanokoji, better known as The Kid, the quarterback for the Wild Gunmen. He was said to have the fastest passes around and Hiruma even fell for several of his trick plays including a fake pass, which was Hiruma's specialty. He had come up with seventeen different plays to beat him, and he came to the realization that none of them would work against him. The Devil Bats lost this match, however there was still hope, because there was a 3rd place spot for them to go to the final showdown, which they could still make if they just beat the Spiders, which they did.
Now that they were back in the running for the Christmas Bowl, they had to choose their spots on the tournament lineup. The Deimon Devil Bats were paired with the previous years winners, the Shinryuji Nagas. Before the battle Riko interviewed both Hiruma and Agon, and the two of them remembered their past. Agon said the perfect team would just be a team made entirely of him, but Hiruma told him you need variety, that a deck of just the same one card would never win. During the match the Nagas were beating them greatly, until Hiruma brought in Yukimitsu, revealing he hadn't been keeping him out of the game because he thought he couldn't play, but because he was showing him footage of the Naga's games to prepare him for this moment. Agon might have been able to react so fast that nobody could outrun him, but Yukimitsu had watched enough of his games that he knew exactly where he would go and how to out maneuver him. With that they began to make their come back, and in the end Hiruma pulled a clever plan, using the "In Motion" rule to allow him to move freely before the hike, pretending that he was trying psyche up the crowd with cheers. When the ball was hiked to Sena it took the Nagas by surprise and they began chasing him down, but when they cornered him Sena passed the ball to Hiruma who charged towards the goal. Agon was on his tail, saying there was no way he would make it in time, but little did Agon know that Hiruma had improved since they had last seen, and he ended up scoring the game winning touch down.
The next team in the tournament were the Ojo White Knights, the team that kicked the Deimon Devil Bats out of the tournament in the spring season. Hiruma knew they had a special new technique, so he sent the team to their annual school festival, and during the quiz tournament Hiruma disguised himself as the quiz master and he asked Ichirou Takami, the quarterback of the White Knights, what this new attack was. He told Hiruma the truth, knowing there was no way they could defend against it. During the game itself each team seemed evenly matched and Hiruma and Ichirou fought in an exchange of wits and strategy, at one point each countering the other multiple times within the same play, constantly saying "Oh no you've got me... is what you expected me to say right?" back and forth until finally Hiruma had Raimon tackle Ichirou's weak leg to bring him down. After this the game came down to one last attempt on Deimon's part with one second on the clock and Sena ran the ball all the way down the field in one move, winning them the game.
After this there was only one more game till they made it to the Christmas Bowl. Hiruma had to prepare his team to go up against the Dinosaurs, so in order to ease their tension and also make his point, he broke into a baseball stadium to let them play a friendly game, inviting along some of the players from other teams. When Banba of the Taiyo Sphinx tried to tag Hiruma out Ryokan dove in front to protect him, letting him realize that the way to win the next game was for Ryokan to do anything to protect the quarterback Hiruma, and he would have to undergo special training. After his training was over, Ryokan arrived for the game, but unfortunately even after all this he wasn't able to stand up to the monsterous Gao, who charged past Ryokan and broke several of Hiruma's bones in one attack, causing Hiruma to have to leave the game on a stretcher. The team tried to make due without him, but luckily Hiruma recovered just enough to get back on the field, faking that he could still use his arms when in fact they were shot, and he was able to lead the team to victory as Ryokan finally awakened his killer instinct to protect his friend.
But, one game when Hiruma hurts his arm it is up to Sena to take his place. But, it is shown how much strength he has when he comes back in te game with his hurt arm. He can barely play but, manages to stack up points. So after several more wins with the help of his whole team Hiruma was finally headed to the big bowl. They would have to face the Alexanders which was one of the best teams yet. During the game the bats are down several points but, Hiruma doesn't go down without a fight. So Sena runs in for many touchdowns and when there was only a second left the team scored the final touchdown winning the game. A celebration was hold and tears were shed. This was the happiest day of Hiruma's life. The team he had made became bowl winners. Even though Hiruma is a hot head who loves to fire several guns his leadership is what helped the team achieve it's ultimate goal.
After the bowl was won Hiruma and Sena were contacted and told that Japan wants them to make a football team for them to go to the world cup. So Hiruma goes under several identitys to scout players and look for enemys. So after along time of recruiting the finally finish and Hiruma returns. Now they had to get to the world cup.
They go to the golden bowl.
