Episode 8: When Extremes Meet
As Lin puts in her resignation, the city's police force reformats to combat the new Equalist threats. As this happens, Korra realizes that she must work to channel her spiritual side as she and her friends form a new team to fight the Equalists on their own terms. However, Tarrlok reveals new strategies to take on the Equalists as his secrets come to light.
Korra and the airbending children stand at the docks of Air Temple Island to greet Mako, Bolin, and Asami as they have arrived at their new home on the island. After a speedy tour of the premises, Korra and Ikki take Asami to her new room where Ikki lets it slip of Korra's interests in Mako. Shooing her away, Asami is grateful for Korra and her hospitality as her new room doesn't remind her of the pain of her father. Tenzin arrives, greeting Asami, as he wants Korra to come with him to the induction of the new Chief of Police. After the botched attack on Hiroshi Sato's Equalist plant, Lin has resigned as the Chief of Police as her second-in-command, Saikhan assumes the new role. During the press conference, he states that all Equalist activity will be reported directly to Tarrlok; an announcement that shocks Tenzin and Korra.
The new Team Avatar is formed
Tarrlok invites Korra to rejoin his task force as she knows that most of his actions are for his own publicity. He immediately shames her for her failure to master airbending yet as she and Tenzin return to the island. Korra yells her frustrations as Tenzin points out that the Avatar always has their past lives for guidance and asks if she has made contact with Aang's spirit. Korra remembers the odd dreams she has had of recent days that have Aang in them. Tenzin knows this must be Aang trying to communicate with her as he urges to meditate. Looking upon the city, Asami, Bolin, and Mako meet with her as she expresses her frustrations to them. They remind her that Aang had his allies and that they are there for her too and form a new Team Avatar to fight the Equalists on their own terms.
Using Asami's car, they patrol the city as a police scanner in her car picks up on an Equaluist raid attacking the prison and freeing supporters. Chasing after them, they are able to knock out a few chi-blockers and stop the convoy. Tarrlok arrives with his task force a little too late as Korra points out that they took care of the problem in a more efficient manner than his task force. Tarrlok urges her to stay out of his way as he leaves. The next morning, he puts forth an idea to place harsh restrictions on the non-benders of the city as Tenzin knows this is too much. However, he is shot down in the vote as Tarrlok is able to do as he pleases. Korra hears the broadcast of an Equalist rally but discovers the non-benders are protesting that their power has been cut off and are being oppressed. They plead with Korra who talks to Tarrlok about this as he attempts to arrest the people there. Korra frees them as Tarrlok instead arrests Mako, Bolin, and Asami for abetting someone with Equalist ties. Korra and Tenzin try to free the innocent people but Saikhan pays no mind to them.
Tarrlok and Korra duke it out
Not wanting to wait around, Korra breaks into Tarrlok's office where the two exchange words. Korra points out that Tarrlok is abusing his powers and doing what Amon says is wrong with benders. Tarrlok reveals that he imprisoned her friends to pressure her into joining the task force, something she denies as she compares Tarrlok to Amon. In a frenzy, Tarrlok attacks her as the two fight it out. However, Korra is able to get the upper hand as chides Tarrlok for his comments about her Avatar abilities earlier. Going in for a strike, Tarrlok stops her, showing his powers as a bloodbender. Tarrlok binds her arms as he overpowers her, something that stuns Korra as there have been small numbers of bloodbenders as well as that it is impossible to do it without a full moon. Tarrlok points out that he has more secrets than she knows as he knocks her out. Having another vision, she sees Yakone from her earlier visions using bloodbending on Sokka, Toph, and Aang as she awakens. Korra finds herself in the back of a police truck as Tarrlok vows to take her somewhere where no one will find her, locking her in and driving off into the night.
