A Sky Dragon Slayer. Wendy was a member of the guild Cait Shelter but after the events of Nirvana she became a member of the Fairy Tail guild.
Wendy was raised by the Sky Dragon Grandine, who disappeared one day without warning, and left her all alone at the age of five. As she wandered in search of her foster parent, she ran into a young boy by the name of Jellal. He allowed her to accompany him on his travels and both, while still hopelessly lost, traveled together for a month. But once Jellal mentioned Anima, he deemed their journey together as far too dangerous and so he left Wendy in the care of the Cait Shelter guild.
Wendy, a character created by Hiro Mashima, is the among the youngest members of Fairy Tail and currently the youngest Dragon Slayer. In her original concept, she was initially supposed to have a wand but for what purpose is unknown (i.e. whether it served as a mere fashion object or as a object that would help her channel her dragon slayer powers, etc.). In addition, her Cait Shelter tattoo was supposed to be located on her left shoulder but was switched to her right similarly to where Natsu and Gajeel's tattoos are located. Lastly, in the anime, Wendy had her cameo in episodes before her actual debut in the manga whereby she was seen shopping in the town of Magnolia and aboard the same train as Lucy, Natsu and Happy rather than making her first appearance in the Oracion Seis Arc.
In Hiro Mashima's notes (volume 27), he states that Wendy was originally a water dragon. Suiyobi is the middle day of the week which means "water day." He got Wendy from Wednesday which was Suiyobi.
Wendy, acting as a representative of Cait Shelter, along with the cat mage Charle, was sent to the alliance meeting of the Fairy Tail, Blue Pegasus, and Lamia Scale guilds to fight against the dark guild, Oracion Seis. When she arrived, everyone was shocked to see a small girl given the task to help take on such a dangerous mission. But once everyone had settled down, they proceeded to locate the base of the Oracion Seis. On their way there, they were attacked by the named guild while Wendy, out of fear, hid behind a boulder during the entire battle. When Brain, the leader of the Oracion Seis, was about to finish of the defeated members of the alliance, he stopped his attack upon seeing her. Several seconds later, he kidnaps her and Happy (whose paw she mistakenly takes). Charle then explains to the others that Wendy is the Sky Dragon Slayer and can heal Erza, who had been poisoned by Cobra's pet snake, Cuberos.
After Brain reveals her healing abilities, Racer brings over a coffin which held the person they intend to revive in order to find the location of Nirvana. Although she refuses to help them, the person in the coffin was none other than Jellal (who was just in an unconscious state). Feeling that she is greatly indebted to him for saving her life, she eventually agrees to heal the man. Once Natsu and Charle arrive to rescue her and Happy, Wendy tearfully apologizes for reviving Jellal and collapses from using her healing magic. Soon after, Natsu takes the unconscious Wendy, along with Happy and Charle, and escape to save Erza.
Once they arrive, Natsu manages to wake Wendy and begs her to heal Erza. Without question, she gladly agrees. After fully healing Erza, Nirvana is activated by Jellal, when they notice a pillar of white light erupt from the ground. Hibiki immediately knocks Wendy out, after she had been blaming herself for reviving Jellal, to prevent her from turning evil due to the effects of Nirvana. He then carries her and along with Lucy, Happy, and Charle, they follow Natsu and Erza who ran off towards the direction of the erupting light. But they are suddenly stopped by Angel, a member of the Oracion Seis. Lucy directs Charle to take Wendy to safety while she faces off against her opponent.
Wendy regains consciousness but still remains ashamed for not being more useful. She recounts her history with Jellal to Charle and explains that despite the rumored details about his evil acts, she still believes that he is a kind and gentle man at heart. Then as Nirvana's second stage is activated, its legs emerge from the ground causing the whole area to shake. After realizing that it was heading towards the Cait Shelter guild, she runs to find Natsu and heals him from the poison he was exposed to in his battle against Cobra, as well as his motion sickness.
She then decided to search for Jellal, hoping that he may know a way to stop it. But she was met with Zero, Brain's alternate personality, who activated Nirvana to attack the guild with an enormous blast of energy. Fortunately, it was stopped by the allied mages and Hibiki informed everyone that the only way to stop Nirvana was to destroy the Lacrima Crystals in each leg at the same time. Jellal, wanting to help Natsu, asked Wendy to take his place in destroying one of its legs to which she agrees. They were successful and to her relief, both Natsu and Jellal were safe. She runs towards Natsu and hugs him as a thanks for keeping his promise to protect her guild. But their celebrations were cut short when both Hoteye and Jellal were arrested by the Magic Council.
Everyone returns to Cait Shelter to recover from their successful mission. Although the Trimens and Natsu were eager to get the party started, Roubaul, the guild master, declines. He reveals that the guild and its members, including himself were not real to begin with. Horrified over this revelation, Wendy tries to stop their spirits from disappearing, but she was too late. Erza comforts her and tells Wendy, "bury the pain of losing your loved ones into the arms of your friends." Then Erza asks her to join Fairy Tail. Once they arrive back to the guild, Wendy is welcomed with open arms and a big party.
After spending some time at the Fairy Tail guild, Wendy has grown closer to everyone, particularly Lucy, Mirajane and Erza. One day, as she walked with Charle, she ran into Mystogan, who revealed to be the Jellal that saved her seven years ago, not the Jellal that had been arrested following the events of Nirvana. But their conversation was cut short when he warned her about the Anima that was about to kill everyone in Magnolia. Refusing to leave her friends, she runs to Fairy Tail to warn everyone but is too late. Everyone but her and Natsu, along with Happy and Charle, were left due to their dragon slayer magic. After Charle explained the details, they all agreed to go to Edolas, the alternate dimension where everyone had been taken.
When they arrived, they stumbled upon Fairy Tail but it was completely different than the one they knew. Wendy was surprised and amazed to see how everyone seemed so different, especially Lucy. They eventually learned that this Fairy Tail was not the one they came to save, rather, everyone in Edolas were counterparts of the Fairy Tail from their homeland, Earthland.
Despite Edo-Lucy being scary, she was kind enough to guide them to the capital to rescue their friends. On their way there, she explained that magic in Edolas was limited and in order to use it they had to purchase magical items from the black market. Wendy and Natsu had no choice since they were unable to use their dragon slayer magic. When they were spotted by the royal soldiers, Wendy managed to open the capsule and release a giant tornado that stalled the soldiers. As they hid to escape, they overheard the arrest of Earthland Lucy, who was mistakenly taken for her Edolas counterpart. She used her magic to summon Scorpio and the team managed to flee. They then decided to spend the night at a nearby town to rest.
After Edo-Lucy left them on their own, they went out on the town and attempted to steal an airship that would take them to the location of the Giant Lacrima Crystal but were immediately captured. Luckily, Natsu's counterpart, Fireball Natsu, came along with his automobile and saved the group. He left them at the capital and while attempting to reach the palace underground, Wendy, Natsu and Lucy were captured again but this time they were arrested by Erza's counterpart, Erza Knightwalker.
While imprisoned, Wendy and Natsu were informed that Lucy was going to be executed and that both Happy and Charle were freed because they fulfilled their mission to help capture them but Wendy refused to believe that they would betray them. Soon Natsu and Wendy were hooked up to a stone that extracted their dragon slayer magic but where later freed by Gray and Lucy. Once Wendy explained that their dragon slayer magic is used to move the Giant Lacrima to hit Exteria and fuse it to create an unlimited amount of magic, the team splits up. Wendy and Charle go to Exteria to stop the lacrima from hitting the city but their attempt to evacuate its residents backfires. The exceed, confident in their Queen's ability to protect them, throw rocks at them.
But once the Exceed realize that Wendy was correct, they help her and the other mages in stopping the Lacrima from colliding with Exteria.
The day after the guild's welcoming party for Lisanna, Wendy complements Charles' precognition powers, however Charle comments that she has a bad feeling about the S-Class exam hence she tells Wendy that she should not get involved. But being the timid girl that she is, says that no one would would her as their partner anyways.
To her surprise, Mest approaches her with a strange pose and asks her to become his partner for the exam. He is then seen in the icy river with Charle telling Wendy that forbids her from accompanying, let alone trusting, such a weirdo. However, Wendy retorts saying that he seems like a nice men and this argument led to them not speaking to each other for a week.
As the participants head toward the island, Makarov appears before them and explain the rules of the test. But once he announced its commencement, Mest and Wendy, along with several others, were forced to remain on the boat because of Fried's runes. However, when the runes expired after 5 minutes, they were able to reach the island before Lucy and Cana despite believing that they were at a disadvantage. Later, Wendy is seen above Mest who had just woken up and learned that they had lost to Gray and Loke. She begins to cry over how she wasn't strong enough to help but Mest comforts her and proposes they venture around the island to see what makes it Fairy Tail's holy ground.
During their small adventure, Charle and Pantherlily show up with the latter grabbing hold of and interrogating Mest. Wendy asks what this is all about but Charle just tells her to stay out of it. As Patherlily states the reason why he believes Mest is not a member of Fairy Tail, Mest teleports away from him and saves Wendy from Azuma's attack. Mest then grins and admits that he isn't part of Fairy Tail but a part of the Magic Council to get dirt on her guild. He continues saying that he ordered a ship to come to the island, which was stationed nearby, to eliminate Fairy Tail, however, Azuma manages to destroy it with ease, right in front of Mest's eyes.
Like Natsu and Gajeel, Wendy was taught dragon slayer magic by her foster parent, the dragon Grandine. However, unlike those two, Wendy's dragon slayer powers gives her the ability to manipulate air which she eats (which according to Gray is the same as breathing) to replenish her energy. In addition, her powers are more defensive in nature and involve healing and support spells that aid her comrades in battle rather than attacks that are on the offensive. Her magic also allows her to predict weather and sense air currents.
|Sky Dragon Slayer Techniques||Description|
Like Gajeel and Natsu, Wendy can exhale her elemental power in a form of a dragon's breath.
Wendy's spell can restore a person's balance, and she uses this spell to take away Natsu's motion sickness temporarily.
Wendy uses Vernier to help her allies (and herself) get faster.
Wendy's spell grants her allies and herself, more strength.
In the manga, Wendy Marvel has prominent canines like her fellow dragon slayers, Natsu and Gajeel. Interestingly, she does not have those canines in the anime, but she still has a sharp nose and taste.
Unlike the manga, Wendy has some extra scenes with Mystogan in her flashbacks during the Nirvana Arc.
