When it comes to gag manga that aren't 4-Koma, you have three ways you can take the manga - you can go for a bunch of stand-alone one-shot gags, you can try for some over-arcing plot, or you can find some middle ground. Most comedy manga tend to pick the latter option, and Hayate the Combat Butler is no exception.

The manga's second volume splits itself between introducing several new characters, all of them Nagi's friends and family members, while including a few one-off jokes involving Nagi's attempts to further woo Hayate, with varying degrees of failure.

The humor in this volume continues with some of the referential humor of earlier volumes, though some of this volume's humor might be considered a little too obscure for newcomers to anime - including a running joke with Sakuya, Nagi's cousin, which requires some basic knowledge of manzai beyond just knowing what it is. The art style is still solid, and contains even less fan-service then the last volume, while still maintaining the same level of humor.

So, while volume 2 of Hayate the Combat Butler won't win any converts from people who were ambivalent towards the last volume, it should keep the interest of people who enjoyed the previous volume.
