The Qwaser of Stigmata #1 - Volume 1

is a manga book published by Akita Shoten that was released on 12/20/2006

Plot Summary

Mafuyu wakes up her friend Tomo with a bump from her Shinai. On her way to class, she stumbles across the soft-spoken (catgirl?) Teresa. Upon reaching the classroom, Tomo's desk is defaced by a pair of other girls, Mayuri and Hana. However, Tomo tries to brush it off while Mafuyu wants revenge. Back at the church, a priest with an eyepatch tells Teresa to wait for someone and "become his Mary" to defeat a "heretic Qwaser." As Mafuyu and Tomo end their school day, they find a silver-haired child who mutters the name "Olja," but are unsure if that person is a boy or a girl. Mafuyu later tries to find a doctor to help, but instead sees the church on fire and runs in to save a painting.

As she enters the church, she is attacked by a robed figure who manipulates magnesium and pins Mafuyu to a wall, demanding to know the location of an icon called the "Theotokos of Tsaritsyn." Then the sillver-haired child from before shows up. The robed figure refers to him as the "stigmatic" Martyr Sasha. Teresa shows up a second later, letting Sasha suck her breasts in order to gain "soma" to power his own abilities. A flashback reveals Sasha's real name to be Aleksandr Nikolaevich Her. Sasha uses his power to make a giant scythe out of iron, and defeats the robed figure who vows to return.

Mafuyu wakes up the next morning after an awkward moment with Tomo, and goes back to the church to find out what happened. She runs into the priest with an eyepatch, Yuri Noda, who dodges her questions about last night, though the previously-burning church seems to have been fully repaired in a surprisingly short time.

Sasha reappears as Aleksandr, an exchange student from Russia now attending St. Mikhailov Academy in the same class as Mafuyu. Mayuri and Hana mess around with Mafuyu again, and try to make a move on Sasha, but he rejects their advances. Mafuyu later catches up to Sasha in a nearby park, but are attacked by the same robed figure from before. The enemy tries submerging magnesium in nearby water to create a burning cloud of hydrogen, but Sasha beats the enemy off again. As he retreats, Sasha swears he will kill the heretics, including the "Golden Qwaser."

After a brief dream sequence, Sasha wakes up in Mafuyu's bed. Mafuyu makes him a pot of borscht as thanks, and Sasha seems to like it, eating the whole pot. He then tells her and Tomo that he will allow them to refer to him as Sasha instead of Aleksandr. After he leaves, Mafuyu tells her friend Ayana how she made a vow to protect Tomo after her father left and their home was turned into a dorm in order to help pay off their debts. The two of them try to think about the location of the icon in order to protect her from the evil robed figure, until said person appears by their window and drags Ayana away. Mafuyu manages to strike at the person with her shinai, and the mask falls off revealing the face of Tomo. Mafuyu can't believe that she would be the evil Qwaser of Magnesium, and neither does Sasha, appearing on a nearby rooftop. After he strikes with his own iron, he reveals that the true enemy was Ayana, and she was simply manipulating Tomo as her puppet the whole time. The reason Tomo appeared sick to Mafuyu so often was because Ayana was sucking out her soma through her breasts.

Ayana and Sasha start fighting each other as she goes on a profanity-laced rant and threatens to burn Tomo's body with her magnesium. However, Sasha uses his own power to oxidize the iron and remove the threat, then burns Ayana instead. Unfortunately, a cursed golden nail from the Golden Qwaser has pierced Tomo's chest (don't ask me how this happened, you're not looking at this manga for the awesome plot development anyway --Ed.) threatening to slowly suck the soma from her body until her death. The Qwaser demands the location of the icon, and Mafuyu starts to give an answer before Sasha cuts her off, telling the Qwaser that if he(?) wants it to come get it.

The next day, Mafuyu is given the history behind the Theotokos of Tsaritsyn from Yuri Noda, but she claims that she is only interested in protecting Tomo. Sasha swears that she will protect her, and Mafuyu replies that he will become her "subordinate" in protecting Tomo with her.

Some time after that, Miyuri and Hana grow jealous of Mafuyu's friendship with Sasha and decide to be friend an incoming exchange student of their own, an impish little girl named Ekaterina Kurae. She sails to Japan on a cruise ship, keeping a coffin of her "mother" close by. When some of the armed passengers on the ship try to get her away from it, Ekaterina ends up summoning her mother from the coffin, who then kills everyone in the room.
