 Honey and Clover

Big news! VIZ has just launched the beta of VIZAnime.com, their up-and-coming streaming video hub. The site currently features big-name titles like Naruto, Honey and Clover, InuYasha (including The Final Act, also streaming on ShonenSunday.com), Bleach, Death Note, and Nana.

Some slightly less top-tier titles are there too, and they're no less enjoyable: Hikaru no Go has eight episodes up so far, and Buso Renkin has three. You can also hit up a few episodes of Prince of Tennis for some wacky sports fun.

It's good to see another anime company really diving into the mix here-- FUNimation has been upping series for some time, and while The Anime Network is a bit more limited on how much you can watch for free, their online video site does feature a lot to its premium members.

Of course, judging from the introductory post on the site's news page, VIZAnime is more geared towards a relatively new anime fan. Still, with titles like Honey and Clover and Death Note, I imagine it won't be hard for hardcore older fans to find some good times as well.

I just hope we get a few of the more mature titles (cough, cough, MONSTER!) eventually, too.

One more thing, and it's a big'un for many of you: as far as I can tell via a quick check on a proxy, the site is U.S. only. Since VIZ owners Shueisha and Shogakukan have similar companies set up in Europe and a few other locations, this isn't too surprising, but...sorry to those of you outside the U.S. (especially Canadians!)

So I picked the first episode of Nana and it was just an embedded Hulu player. More free anime is good but, if they just show stuff from Hulu then this site is kind of pointless.

So are they just doing Naruto up to Shippudan?   Is Shippudan a separate license then that no one has? (except CR to stream it?)

 @Vorisc - that's the Viz Channel at Hulu? I don't see what's wrong with that. It lets them add extra features that Hulu's not set up to support, and lets Hulu take the loss on the physical costs of the streaming.

However, it would be nice if they could get additional region rights, and when someone from outside the US clicks in they can stream the series where they have extended rights on their own account.

About time Viz.

  Le sigh...
  Le sigh...
You'd think working around stuff like region lock outs would be a bigger priority for these places as it just necessitates the needs of many to go down the route of piracy of these shows by the watching of them on illegal streaming sites or bit torrents where they get no revenue. I know it takes alot of work to do or they would have it already, but all they are doing by restricting content like this is raising generations of countries full of people that never had to pay for anime because there was no way for them to get it legally.

Now when they finally do get around to making it available in more regions it will fall flat because all those people that have been forced to pirate will look at them dumbfounded when they ask for money for something they have gotten for free all their lives. Then they will look at those regions and say "Well it doesnt make sense to go through the trouble of localizing it for those regions because we wont make enough money because no one is buying from there." which will intern hurt the industry by keeping it from the necessary growth it needs to sustain itself. It just seems silly to me that working on region black outs isn't a bigger priority for the industry. Who knows maybe it is a priority and there is just some secret brick wall all these places cant get around, i don't know. I reiterate, Le Sigh....

Sooo, VIZ wants to expand corruption of anime and manga to the internet? Why the hell go to their site where they screw things up when you can go to other sites that don't alter content?

For those outside the US, go to other anime websites. They don't discriminate on countries and they do a better job. Point in fact, boycott anything VIZ does! They don't deserve a dime of your money.

@crusader8463:
It's also possible the Japanese liscense is super touchy or some other bullshit and either refuses to give them a liscense outside of the U.S. or the process to is a very painstakingly slow one or since I assume this is fairly new they don't have the infrastructure or resources to support streaming to countries outside of the United States. It's unfortunate but hey it happens.

Easy bud, it wasn't a choice for those of us outside of the U.S. anyway, well unless you're using an U.S. proxy server.

Cool, I hope they put some more up there soon.

Yeah um, I don't think you properly appreciate how legal issues work in these kind of cases.  Hulu and the like services aren't doing it to spite non-US folks anymore than iTV guys are doing it to screw non-UK folks.  It's a matter of getting legal content in other countries requiring a great bit of work

@Konanda:

@Addfwyn:
I'm not going to go easy on VIZ, because they don't do anything to deserve it. This company took two of my favorite series and one they make idiotic edits and the other they completely butchered.

I'm well aware of how it works and international copyright laws. It's about encouraging people to go anywhere but VIZ for their manga and anime needs. For me it's about doing any little thing I can to make things hard on them.

And more power to you my friend, I think it's great that you are very passionate about your utter contempt for VIZ, I was just put off by the bolded statement, which to me seemed the same as using the caps locks button to unleash the fury, which just usually makes me immediately loose some respect for the message the poster was trying to get across. I mean if I wanted to listen/read a ragenaut telling me what to do without a well thought out reason, while yelling at me I'd change my area of study from electrical engineering to political science and go into politics for a living.

@Konanda: Like i said in my OP i know the difficulties of why they cant but it just seems like it should be a bigger priority for these things to do what ever it takes to get it done. Again i know its not that simple of a thing to do or it would be done but they need to start convincing these places that they are just hurting themselves by not allowing it in other regions for some of the reasons i mentioned below.
