Yesterday AnimeNewsNetwork announced that they've added a ton of videos to their site thanks to a deal with Joost, which allows them to embed Joost videos on the site. Joost has deals with many anime companies, so it was a pretty significant addition to ANN's video library-- titles like Shikabane Hime, Angelic Layer, Astro Boy, and Black Blood Brothers just a few among the new titles. According to ANN's Justin Sevakis (discussed on the forums), Joost's deal with the anime companies allows for such third-party embedding, and ANN's deal was only with Joost, effectively working around the anime companies, which seems odd to me, but all in all, it's a pretty good deal for ANN.

Now, these Joost videos also includes a number of VIZ titles-- including their big three, Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note. But today VIZ announced that it was asking Hulu and Joost to temporarily disable embedding on third party sites, even ones that have a deal like ANN's, for exactly those three titles. It's unclear if VIZ's decision is actually related ANN's deal or not-- I have an e-mail out to VIZ requesting comment, but since it's now after office hours on a Friday at VIZ HQ, I doubt I'll get an answer before Monday. If I get anything, you guys'll be the first to know!

I thought Sevakis made a brilliant move in his ambitious video streaming project:

If you can't make a decent video player or provide interesting content for it, just take it - err... I mean "embed it" - from someone else who did.
