This series takes place at a school where there is a "day class" of humans and a "night class" which, unbeknownst to students, consists of vampires.

Yuuki Cross is the adopted daughter of the headmaster of a unique school, the Cross Academy. By day, it's a normal school, and she attends classes as a student and as a prefect. But at night, the Day Class heads back to their dorm, and the Night Class comes out to the school. Unbeknownst to the other students, the Night Class consists only of vampires. The school is an experiment in whether vampires and humans can coexist peacefully. The vampires are lead by Kaname Kuran, one of the highest-ranked pureblood vampires left in existence, as well as the man who saved Yuuki from another vampire when she was a child. She grows up revering him and develops a crush on him. Shortly after being adopted, another vampiric victim comes to stay with the Cross family: Zero Kiryuu. Like Yuuki, his entirely family was killed by vampires. Unlike Yuuki, his family consisted of vampire hunters. Zero swears to kill them all and even as the series opens, he is unconvinced of the possibility that humans and vampires can coexist.
