Usopp

Origin

Usopp is the son of Yasopp, a high ranking member of the Red-Hair Pirates, which is one of the 4 crews of the Yonkou. One trademark of Usopp is the fact that he is easily frightened, though many of the things that don't faze the other Straw Hats would frighten most normal people. A second trademark of Usopp is his lies: he is often seen telling tales of his adventures which never actually happened, or pretending be the captain of the Straw Hats or of another crew of "8,000 men."

Creation

Usopp is one of the main characters in the series One Piece that was created by Eiichiro Oda. The series first began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 4, 1997. He first appeared in the Syrup Village Arc that began in Volume 3.

He first appeared in One Piece Volume 3, CH. 23 "Captain Usopp Appears", and his first anime appearance was in One Piece - Episode 8 "Who Will Win? Showdown Between the True Powers of the Devil!. His character in the Japanese series is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi, and the U.S. dub produced by FUNimation is performed by Sonny Strait.

Usopp's name is most likely derived from the Japaese phrases 嘘 (うそ, uso), which means lie. He's also believed to be partially inspired by the ancient Greek story teller Aesop. In Japanese his name is spelled as イソップ (Isoppu). When Usopp introduced himself he says, "I'm Usopp. (俺はウソップ, Ore wa Usoppu)". This could also be mistake for saying, "I'm a liar".

Character Evolution

For most of the story, Usopp is a tanned, slim teenager with black curly hair and a long nose. He usually wears a dark yellow plaid bandanna, a blue and white striped armband on his left arm, special sniper goggles , brown overalls with a white sash and no shirt underneath.

His dream is to become a brave warrior of the sea and to go to Elbath, the land of giants. Usopp serves as the crew's sniper and is quite good at it. He also has the ability to take high amounts of damage and continue fighting. He is seen to be a good runner which he uses to run away, scared of his enemies. He had an attachment to the crew's former ship, the Going Merry, which lead to a falling out with the rest of the crew. It was a reminder to him of his friends back on his home island, because it was his friends who had crafted the ship. After his falling out he created an alternate persona to assist them in rescuing Robin when she was captured. Most of the crew saw through the persona but Chopper and Luffy were fooled.
