Though this episode is considered filler, Eiichiro Oda had wanted to include this story into the Loguetown Arc of the manga, but was pressured to hurry the story along to the Grand Line.
The characters Daddy the Father, Daddy Masterson; and his daughter, Carol, had been intended to of been in the manga. They were added as a nod to the novelized version of the Loguetown Arc that was published in 2000.
In the story Daddy tells Usopp about his father, Shanks is not wearing his straw hat. This fact puts these events after he gave Luffy the straw hat. Though Lucky Roux and Ben Beckmen appear, then have no spoken lines.
