This series was made for the 20th Gundam anniversary and had series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino return to the directors chair for a Gundam series and it is the only alternative universe series he has directed. Its mostly known for being the most experimental and unorthodox Gundam series.

Turn-A Gundam takes place in a universe where technology is on the same level as Word War I and is about the conflict between civilizations on earth and the invading Moonrace, humans that have lived on the moon for ages, that come back to earth in need of new land and resources. Caught between the two sides is the main character Loran Cehack, a scout sent from the moon to investigate the Earth that the Moonrace has had no contact with during their stay on the moon. Loran quickly find himself liking the people and places on earth, but when the arival of the Moonrace main forces is much more hostile then he was lead to believe, and finding himself coming under the posession of a myserious mecha named White Doll, he has to take the dificult choice of defending the Earth that he has quickly come to like so much, against the Moonrace that he still want to believe in.

The unorthodox mecha designs were provided by American designer Syd Mead and is often discussed by Gundam fans that either like the breath of fresh air Meads designs bring to the Gundam franchise, while others argue that they are to different and not as good av previous designs. Yoko Kanno returns to make the music after providing the sountrack for Tominos anime Brain Powered one year earlier.
