Tsundere Mash-Up

Welcome to the first Tsundere Mash-up blog (female edition)! Our combatants are Asuka Langley Soryu (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Lum (Urusei Yatsura). I pick these two because they are oldest and well known Tsundere characters.

I tried not to give too much facts that leads to spoilers. Beware of the facts I give if you are looking forward to try these series.

Definition of Tsundere Characters

"Tsundere" is a portmanteau of two Japanese phrases: "tsuntsun" and "deredere" and refers to characters who act hostile to the object of their affections, but secretly (or not-so-secretly) harbor feelings for them.

Via Anime Vice

Asuka SoryuLum Invader
  • She is a prideful woman who wants to be recognized as an Evangelion pilot.
  • Her love interest is Shinji Ikari who she finds a pathetic loser. Despite how she views Shinji, she flirts and teases Shinji. Like all tsundere characters, she can get abusive. She uses words as main form of abuse.
  • Lum is an Oni Alien of royal heritage. Her race invades the planet earth, and when Lum plays tag with an Earth boy, Ataru Moroboshi, to determine the fate of man kind, she falls in love with him.
  • Lum is only abusive with Ataru if she sees Ataru flirting with other girls. She shocks Ataru for his unfaithfulness.

Given the facts, who do you see as the most/better Tsundere character?

Note: Unfortunately, I have not seen the anime shows to get to know these girls. Feel free to correct facts that I researched. A lot of people argue that Lum is not a tsundere character. I couldn't think of classic character of a well known series to combat Asuka.

I will do more mash-ups since Gia did some for the Moe concept. Oh yeah, I welcome any improvements to these threads.

Damn! A year old?

I'd go for Asuka. How many Tsundere characters were there before this one? Was she the original?

@Supreme Marvel:

Not sure. Lum should be older than Asuka. We can ask some folks who know a lot more anime than me:

@takashichea: Let's see what I can recall from anime/ manga before 1995 (the year Eva came out). This accounts for "tsun tsun", "dere dere" and ambiguous examples of the character type:

  • Madoka Ayukawa (Kimagure Orange Road)
  • Koume Sawaguchi (Blue Seed)
  • Chi Chi (Dragon Ball)
  • Casca (Berserk, manga was out in 1990 so counts)
  • Yuriko Star (Irresponsible Captain Tylor)
  • Rei Hino/ Sailor Mars (Sailor Moon)
  • Ai Amano (Video Girl Ai)
  • Keiko Yukimura (Yuyu Hakusho)
  • Kyoko Otanashi (Maison Ikkoku)
  • Ayeka (Tenchi Muyo)
  • Nadia (Nadia: Secret of Blue Water)
  • Skuld (Oh My Goddess)

Asuka is best tsundere of all time. Kirino and Biribiri are good to.

And good call by Dream chi chi at the time of the 23rd budokai was quite tsundere.

@Marshal Victory:

It's all right.

Didn't remember Sailor Mars was one. It has been 9 or 8 years since I watched the series. Thanks, these would be good for future match ups in the future. Vapo is helping out with this.

Great, one vote for Asuka. I would agree. Though, I haven't watched Lum's show, but I only got to watch one movie from NGE. I haven't read or watch the series. I only got into the 2nd movie because of Toonami's movie night in 2013 I think.

For those not knowing what I mean, there are two variants of tsundere portrayed in most instances in anime. The "tsun tsun" variety puts up a tough, strong and sometimes hostile front, but has a gentle and loving side that they show only for their "special person". The "dere dere" variety has a more kind and generous personality on the surface, but can become aggressive and angry in certain situations that involve their "person of interest." However, there are occasions where there are tsundere characters that don't follow these particular setups of the tsundere archetype (Madoka Ayukawa and Hitagi Senjougohara as examples) that follow a more natural or unique take on the character archetype.
