Tsuna's new tutor Reborn shows up and changes everything

Tsunayoshi (Tsuna) Sawada is the Main Protagonist of the Katekyo Hitman Reborn series. Tsuna starts the series as a below average middle School Student, whose reputation for being able to do nothing right has earned him the nickname Of "No Good Tsuna" among his peers. That is until the world's greatest hitman and home tutor, Reborn, appears and tells Tsuna that he is to become the head of the Vongola Family. He tells him that the original boss of the Vongola family, Vongola Primo, crossed over to Japan after he retired and he is now Tsuna's Great Great Great Grandfather. It has come time for the next boss of the Vongola Family to be chosen and Tsuna is the only surviving heir to this position. Tsuna wants no part of it and thinks its a joke, that is until Reborn notices the crush that Tsuna has on Kyoko Sasagawa. Reborn shoots Tsuna in the head with a Dying Will Bullet which causes Tsuna to be "Reborn" out of his own body as this hyperactive energetic and very aggressive persona, who follows out whatever regret he had as he was dying and tries to achieve it.

Major Story Arcs

Daily Life Arc

As Tsuna tries to go on with his life, Reborn continues to force him to form his "family" for when he takes over the title of the next head of the Vongola Family. As a result Tsuna meets several members who can fight beside him, such as Gokudera, a boy who was raised for the one purpose of being the Vongola boss's right hand man. After that the school's local baseball fanatic, Takeshi Yamamoto joined up with his "family" because he thought it was all a game and it sounded fun to him. Even Kyoko's brother Ryohei, the boxing machine of the school signed up to be part of the team after Tsuna fought him in a boxing ring, which he only accomplished thanks to the help of the Dying Will Bullet. This bullet also helped him save the life of Haru, Tsuna's neighbor who is a slightly odd girl who after being saved wants to marry Tsuna and become the wife of the next head of the Vongola family.

Tsuna's Mafia family isn't quite what you'd expect

Tsuna started to get used to the idea of assassins coming to attack him as his family came together, the oddest of which possibly being Lambo, a five year old assassin who wanted to kill Reborn, only to cry every time he is defeated. Lambo eventually moves in with Tsuna, and so does the next assassin to come for him, I-Pin, a young girl who has terrible vision and mistakes Tsuna for her real target. Tsuna comes across more dangers when he is dragged by Reborn to an island get away for the mafia families, which is where he starts to learn some more about Reborn when he finds that he isn't the only baby that is working for the mafia. He is also introduced to Reborn's last pupil, Dino, who Reborn says was a lot like Tsuna before he underwent his training, which makes Tsuna and Dino have sort of a brotherly relationship.

Kokuyo Junior High Gang

Many students from Namimori were attacked by students from Kokuyo Junior High, including Gokudera. After Reborn identified who these attackers were, Tsuna got a letter from the 9th Vongola boss telling him that he had to go out and capture these attackers. Tsuna was joined by Gokudera, Yamamoto, and Bianchi as they went to Kokuyo Land Amusement park where they would find the targets. During this time Reborn's pet lizard, Leon, lost his tail and started to undergo a transformation. Reborn tells him that the last time this happened Leon produced a weapon for Dino to use meaning it was now Tsuna's time.

Tsuna takes down the fake Mukuro

At the amusement park Tsuna remembers when he was brought there as a kid, but each member of their team is attacked soon after. Luckily they are able to defeat these attackers from Kokuyo Junior High. Tsuna went into the woods looking for the gang's leader, when he came across a student with a strange symbol on his eye who claims to have been held captive by the members of this school. He asks Tsuna many questions about Reborn and begins to demand answers up until Tsuna gets scared and runs away. However as he runs away he comes across a man with a giant ball and chain who claims to be the gang's leader Mukuro. Tsuna notices that this man has already defeated all of his friends and Reborn uses the last Dying Will Bullet on Tsuna who is able to fight this man and defeat him, only to learn afterward that he wasn't Mukuro after all, but merely a captive of Mukuro named Lancia who was being forced to fight against his will.

The Mittens given to Tsuna by Leon

All alone now Tsuna enters a stage and finds the student he had just talked to, who reveals himself to be the real Mukuro. But Tsuna sees he isn't the only one to make it this far, as the head of the school's disciplinary committee, Hibari, attacks and fights Mukuro. It looks like he has won, but then he is attacked from the back, and Mukuro reveals that he has the power to possess others he has cut with his trident. Gokudera and Bianchi come in and, possessed by Mukuro, start fighting Tsuna. Tsuna shows some bravery in not running away as he wants to save these two, and it is this courage that causes Leon to produce the two gifts for Tsuna. The first is a pair of gloves that look like normal mittens, and the other is another bullet for Reborn to fire, even though he has no idea what the effect of this one will be.

Tsuna in his new Hyper Dying Will Mode is able to fight Mukuro

When Tsuna is hit by the bullet, while wearing the mittens, he enters a new stage. He no longer goes into Dying Will Mode with these gloves on, he goes into Hyper Dying Will Mode, a mode that doesn't strengthen his outer self, but his inner. This stage allows him to see all that is real and he can fight his friends and knock them out in a way that will not hurt them but just knock them out. He then fights Mukuro and reveals that his gloves can keep him afloat in the air and even allow him to fly for limited amounts, which gives him the edge to maneuver around Mukuro's attacks and finally defeat him. After this defeat, the Vendice show up and take Mukuro away to prison while a team of medics from the mafia arrive to try and help Tsuna's friends.

Varia and Vongola Rings Arc

Tsuna encountered Basil after they were attacked by a swordsman and learned from him that this swordsman was Squalo of the Varia, a group of assassins that worked for the Vongola. However since Tsuna wasn't the boss of the Vongola yet and he was chosen to be the next boss by his own father (who was a member of the CEDEF, the group that Basil worked for) he was going to be challenged by the Varia for the right to be the next boss. Tsuna trained for ten days with Reborn and Basil until it was time for the battle with the Varia.

The Sky Ring Battle

When the battles came around each member of the Varia and the Vongola were given two halves of rings, these rings represented which guardian position they would be fighting for and when the rings combined into the Vongola Rings that person would be the winner. Tsuna was disqualified from his fight before it even began because he interrupted Lambo's battle to save his life. However after Hibari's battle against a Gola Mosca robot, it was revealed that the 9th boss of the Vongola was trapped inside of it and powering it with his own Dying Will Flame. Xanxus, the head of the Varia, accused Tsuna of attempting to assassinate the 9th when he stopped the machine from going on a rampage, and Tsuna realized what Xanxus's plan was all along, to take over the Vongola, making it a dictatorship under him. He gave Tsuna one chance to stop him and allowed him to re-enter the battle. The two of them fought and Xanxus was able to handle him well until Tsuna unlocked the newest power of his X Gloves, the Zero Point Breakthrough, which allows him to reverse the polarity of anyone's Dying Will Flame, essentially freezing over their attacks. Xanxus doesn't take this defeat easily and he collects all the rings together, however after putting them on he discovers that they are rejecting him because all along he has not been the real son of the 9th, but rather an adopted son.

Future Arc

Tsuna wakes up Ten Years in the future in a coffin

One day thanks to a mishap by Lambo, Reborn was shot with the Ten Year Bazooka, which would have caused him to swap places with himself ten years in the future, however nothing came back when he was hit. Tsuna figured he would return in a few moments, however days passed with no sign of him. Suddenly one day Tsuna was attacked from behind by a mysterious assailant and was struck with a blast from the Ten Year Bazooka himself, causing him to swap places with his future self, however when Tsuna woke up he found himself in a coffin, causing him to wonder if this meant he was dead in ten years. He opened the coffin and was greeted by the future Gokudera who was overjoyed to see him, however before he could explain what had happened to the world or to Tsuna, he vanished and swapped places with the present day Gokudera, implying he had also been struck with the Ten Year Bazooka. They eventually came across Lal Mirch, who gave them an idea of what had happened to the world and introduced them to the new weapons everyone used called Box Weapons. She told them about how a new Mafia boss named Byakuran had been leading his family, the Millefiore Family on their way towards conquering the world and Tsuna realized it all made sense, that it must have meant that in the future he had been killed by Byakuran.

Tsuna came across the future Yamamoto who lead them towards their secret hidden base, where Tsuna discovered that Reborn was still alive, he just had to stay in this base since the Arcobaleno could not survive in the atmosphere of this new world. Yamamoto told Tsuna that the only way to defeat Byakuran was through the use of the Vongola rings, meaning he had to assemble the Vongola Guardians. The first one they were going to try and reach was the strongest of the Guardians, Hibari. They tracked down his last known location, where they found Lambo, I-Pn, and Haru's future selves being attacked by members of the Millefiore family. Tsuna ran into the battle and came face to face with the future Kyoko, however the moment the two of them met, Kyoko, Haru, Lambo, I-Pin, and Yamamoto all swapped places with their past selves.

Tsuna was able to get his friends out of the battlefield as they found the future Hibari and made their way into his base. Along with the future Ryohei they began to train, Hibari teaching Tsuna specifically and putting him through the ringer. Tsuna couldn't beat him but was able to become strong enough that the team infiltrated Byakuran's base. Tsuna was seperated from the rest of their team and was knocked unconscious by a group of Gola Moscas. When he woke up he was in the base of the Mosca's creator and mechanic, Spanner, who said that even though they were enemies he had taken an interest in Tsuna's power, he said that his Burner attacks were strong but not nearly complete yet. He gave Tsuna a pair of contact lenses that would show him how to even out a blast of energy behind him to stabilize him against the massive attack he had to fire out in front of him so he wouldn't fly out of control. The two of them were attacked by Hepburn Iris and her experiments, and thanks to these contact lenses Tsuna was able to release an X-Burner much stronger than anything he had ever used.

Character Evolution

Tsuna was considered a failure throughout the series

At the beginning of the series, Tsuna was considered a failure. He had no motivation, a lack of athleticism and absolutely no luck at all, he didn't even do well in school, having an average test score of 15. He was told he was useless by his peers, a fact that he openly acknowledged. It was because of this that he got the name "No Good Tsuna." When Reborn arrived that slowly changed. Over the course of his adventures with the mafia, Tsuna has gained a lot more confidence in himself. Even Reborn has to acknowledge his judge of character, as Tsuna can tell If a person Is "good inside" from their first meeting. Tsuna Is very compassionate towards others, to the point that he will often feel regret towards hurting his opponents. Like most Shonen Protagonists, Tsuna will do anything to protect his friends, to the point of giving up his life.

Powers and Abilities

Dying Will Mode

Dying Will Mode-

When hit by a Dying Will Bullet, Tsuna has an explosion of energy. He will do whatever It takes to "resolve" any regrets or inhibitions that he may have. This form can be rather comical as Tsuna Is often seen ripping off his clothes due to the surge of adrenaline he receives.

Hyper Dying Will Mode

Hyper Dying Will Mode-

When Tsuna is hit by a "Rebuke" Bullet, the limits of his willpower are removed. While his Dying Will form forces his Dying Will Flame out externally, Tsuna's own power Is used to remove the limits of his body internally in this form. The personality Of this form change is the polar opposite of his Dying Will Mode. In Dying Will mode he receives a sudden burst of energy. In Hyper Dying Will Mode, he is much calmer and organized as symbolized by the calmness of his flame.

X-Gloves

X gloves-

Given to him by Reborn, and upgraded by The Vongola spirits. These gloves allow Tsuna to focus his flames into his hands, allowing him to fly, fire blasts of pure flame energy, and use the energy to enhance his strength.

Zero Point breakthrough-

A technique that allows Tsuna to reverse the polarity of his dying will flames, and causing him to freeze everything he touches.

Zero point breakthrough revised-

Tsuna absorb the opponent's flame and convert it into his energy.

X- Burner-

Tsuna will hold out his hand behind him and fire off a blast of energy to keep him stable, then fire out an equal amount of energy from his other hand. The energy levels must be even or else Tsuna will be blown backwards and the attack will more than likely miss. He was given a set of contact lenses by Spanner to tell him when he has the energy even.

Tsuna and Reborn in the Vongola GP comic

Vongola GP

In Shonen Jump's spin-off book for kids called "Super Strong Jump," Katekyo Hitman Reborn is given a series called Vongola GP in which the characters are reimagined as racers in a game called Battle Karts (which is sort of a cross between Nascar and Mariokart) and in this world Tsuna is a racer who is the decedent of the greatest racer the game has ever seen, however he is nothing more than a failure who has lost 999 races so far and begins to get training from a mysterious infant called Reborn to turn his losing streak around.
