TORIKO #147 is Hysterical... but Probably Not in the Way it Intended

For the past couple weeks, I’ve repeatedly voiced my admiration for how the people behind the HST have more-or-less honed the art of shonen to a science. Checking back on TORIKOit’s pretty clear that science isn’t worth a damn without inspiration.

I only ever caught the first episode, previously. Sam went on to watched the first season box set, a while back, and he came to loath the show - - echoing the sentiment that it’s just blatantly an anime by committee. Popping in at the end of this arc, now, it’s impossible not to look at Toriko himself and see what you’d get if anybody ever chewed Goku, Kenshiro and JoJo up together and spat them up into a baking mold. His presence alone makes this such a Stereotypical Anime that it feels like some all-purpose shonen parody on, like, the SIMPSONS or something.

The wild card in this whole premise, of course, is the IRON CHEF element. It seemed pretty clever and cute at the beginning but, even then, I wondered how long that joke could be stretched. I’ve skipped 50 hours of content, and the weaponization-of-culinary-arts gag still feels tired. I can only imagine how interminable it must be for anybody who’s “powered through” all the arcs in-between. Maybe ONE PIECE mashed-up all its shonen super-moves with gags… but they weren’t all the same gag.

And what’s unintentionally funny here is that pretty much every single dude has a roided-up physique; but it’s like the crew watched JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE and totally missed the joke. There’s obviously a lot of money invested here, but the designs are just so awkward and generic that it isn’t a visually appealing a show.

At the least, it’s an amusing counterpoint to the praise-train I’ve been conducting for BLEACH, NARUTO and ONE PIECE. This… this is like the Frankenstein monster the shonen factory system had to dump off its conveyor belt.

Watch "Toriko and Komatsu Embark on a New Voyage!" and decide for yourself.

Toriko is one of the first Shonen that didn't draw me in where I first saw it. It didn't have the punch I was looking for

I'm reading the current chapters because I subscribe to Shonen Jump, it just been ok

Toriko managed to get over 147 episodes so obviously there is an audience for it. I Was interested at first but I stopped real quick in the begging when it was clear how "tropey" Toriko would be. Not every show needs to be creative though. Some shows are specifically for mass market.

This anime sucks compared to the manga, they really screwed up the ending -.-'

I failed to get into toriko. i enjoyed the anime for the first 100 episodes, and after a while it could no longer excite me. I jumped to the manga, read a few chapters into the cooking tournament, but it all seemed too absurd for my tastes.

I loved One Piece and Fairy Tail more than Toriko, but I still like Toriko. The weird premise, the predominant male cast, and how powers work can turn off some folks who come from the other Shonen series. I was less compatible with Toriko.

What I like about Toriko is brought ideas that you have to respect life, humans, animals, and plants. Enjoying life to the fullest in its adventures and eating with your friends and families. I think it reflects the hardships in Japan's history when you had famines in the villages. Toriko Gourmet Santa episodes capture that feeling.

My teammate WayBig and I will come up with an article on Toriko soon.

That's the problem guys. Starting with the anime is a big no no and ending with it even more. The censorship is strong and the plot towards the end takes such a drastic turn from the manga that it can't be salvaged if they want to continue the anime, it will need a reboot.

Toriko's anime is the main reason it gets no love, probably one of the most hated series I know. But I dont Blame them seeing as this adaptation was bland and generic unlike the manga. And most people get into shonen series via anime. But that transformation was just.... ugh.

For Magi, they did an anime exclusive ending in season 1, but they were able to start season 2 without much hassle in the continuity. With Hakuryuu's arm and other conflicts, they kept going. I'm not up to speed with the manga. Was it so much of a game changer?

If you compared to Soul Eater, that did some drastic changes mid anime season by not killing a certain character, and at the same time, Maka finishes off the final villain. That series needed a reboot.

It was that drastic of a change. Without spoiling specific details, One character that should've died lived, one extremely important character did not make their debut, some characters who lost won instead and vice versa, a global catastrophe that occurred in the manga was prevented, Toriko's power up towards the end not only wasn't the same, but it was drastically more than it should've been and defied the logic of how the Gourmet Cells evolve, and the entire end result of the Cooking Featival arc was drastically altered to the point that the billion bird arc can't happen. That wasn't even everything, and all of that happened in 1 episode.

I see your point. I just forgot that I haven't even watch the final episode. I think I left off where I was uploading images. Better catch up and complete Yusuke52's request to upload Ichiryuu.
