Toren Smith passes away on March 4, 2013 (ANN listed March 5th) at the age of 52.
He is the founder of Studio Proteus, a company that translated a majority of manga series. Studio Proteus is known for bringing these manga series to the U.S.: Appleseed, Outlanders, Lone Wolf and Cub, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Astro Boy. Studio Proteus mentioned that Smith had co-translated over 23,000 manga pages. The first manga series he ever translated was called The Legend of Kamui in 1988. Smith, Adam Warren, and others are responsible for creating the original Dirty Pair comics for North America because Haruka Takachiho's novel of the same name didn't have a manga in Japan. Later on, Smith sold Studio Proteus to Dark Horse Comics in 2004. He then worked for Viz Media in Viz Communications.
He along with Toshio Okada, John McLaughlin, and many others founded AnimeCon 1991 which became Anime Expo's Predecessor. Smith also organized the first anime convention at Baycon in California.
He appeared as a character in Gainax's Aim for the Top! Gunbuster series.
