A blind Earthbender who joins Aang's group to teach him earthbending. Even without the ability to use her eyes she is still a powerful earthbender.
Origin
Toph is a member of the Earthbender nation, she is part of a wealthy family who live in the town gaoling. However, Toph is blind and so her parents are over-protective. They thought that she was weak and vulnerable because she was blind, however that just simply was not the case. They did not want Toph to be in any danger and so they kept her at the begginers stage of earth bending for a very llong time, over 6 years. This angered Toph, and so she ran away, and it is when she ran away, when she stumbeled across other blind earthbenders in a cave. Toph imitated their styles and became a real master at earth-bending, to the point were she could see with her feet, this made up for her eyes.
Toph decided to keep her abilities hidden from her parents, and used to regularly sneak to an underground earthbending tournament, where she was known as the Blind Bandit, where she was unbeatable, winning 42 matches and losing none, she won the title.
Character Evolution
Aang goes to the town Gaoling which is in the Earth nation, he goes there to look for an earthbender to teach him how to earthbend. He then finds out about the underground earthbending tournament, and watches Toph easily defeat her opponents, he is amazed with her abilities, and remembers his vision in which he saw Toph. Aang knew that it was Toph who should teach him.
Aang wants to talk to Toph and decides to go into the ring, to fight Toph, he easily defeats Toph because she is fully blind when things are not touching the ground. Toph is upset because he beat her and ended her winning streak, she does not even give Aang a chance to say anything, and she stormed out very angry.
Aang does not give up, and eventually tracks down Toph and explains that he is the avatar, but Toph is still very angry and gives him a hard time. She eventually decides to think about it, but, Aang and Toph are kidnapped by earthbenders who think that Toph lost on purpose becuase they did not see anything hit her, and they did not know that Aang was an air bender. The hosts demand many be paid for the release of Aang and Toph, but when Toph's parents pay the money, only Toph is released, and they were going to take Aang to the fire nation. However, Katara and Aang ask for Toph to help. Toph eventually decides to help Aang when her parents doubt her abilities, and it annoys Toph. Toph easily defeats all of her opponents and astonished her "teacher", and her parents, she frees Aang. Her parents are not too pleased and they decide that Toph should not leave the house as they work out that she was doing dangerous things. However, Aang says that her father changed his mind, and that Toph should join Aang and help him on his quest.
Toph becomes very useful, and is a powerhouse and vital in the invasion of the fire nation.
Personality
Toph has a very interesting personality, she is very different to the others, she has no manners, but that is because she does not like to use them, she actually can be very formal if she wishes, this is partly due to her posh background. However, Toph is a tomboy, she is not interested in her looks, due to the fact that she is blind, although she does have a girly side,as she is happy when Katara tells her that she is pretty. Toph is very rough around the edges, she can be very sarcastic, and this is used as humour and almost always links to her being blind, e.g. Toph says that Sokka's picture looks nice even though she can not see it.
Toph is very violent and has a temper, she has had a fight with Katara, and was very hard on Aang when training him. Toph has a sense of humour, and an example of this is when she pretended to be a bad guy, she was starting to get into her role, showing that she likes acting.
Toph isvery honest, and sometimes it is very harsh, she has a kind of spoilt attitude, but is very loving, and she missed her parents.
Relationships
Parents
She loves her parents, but wants them not to be over-protective, she wanted her parents to treat her like a normal child, and even though she had contemplated running away, she loves her parents.
At first, she hated Aang because he ended her unbeaten record, she was annoyed, but as she spent more time with Aang, she gradually liked him more and more, she was very hard on him during training, but is a good friend, it was nothing personal, she is just impatient, and so although she liked Aang, she was not initially teacher material.
Toph and Katara argue all of the time, it is as if they were sister, they have clashing personalities, have had a fight, but at the end of the day are still great friends, Katara brings out Toph's girly side, and Toph trusts Katara with her secrets, and so they are very close friends.
Sokka is very close to Toph, Toph is slightly harsh on Sokka, but likes him as he is funny, and is also a good friend who would fight alongside Toph like a loyal friend. There is a suggestion that there is a relationship between Toph and Sokka that is personal.
Toph likes Zuko's element of mystery, and knows that Zuko is a good guy, she likes to spend time with him, and almost envies the way Zuko's grandpa loves zuko. They become good friends.
