1938- . Born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Katsumata graduated from the film department of Nippon University in 1960. He found work the same year with the Kyoto branch of Toei, working as an assistant director to Masahiro Makino on numerous samurai dramas. Transferring to Toei Animation in Tokyo, he worked as a director on the anime Ken the Wolf Boy and Cyborg 009. Although he remained at Toei, during the 1970s he became strongly associated with that studio's output of anime based on the works of creator Go Nagai, most notably Devilman and Mazinger Z. He also worked on many of Toei's action-based anime, including Fist of the North Star and Saint Seiya.
