Anyone Read The Star Trek Manga?

I've never been the biggest Star Trek fan (I've always liked Star Wars more).  I've seen the Star Trek manga before and have almost picked it up a couple times.  I'm wondering if anyone's actually read it before.  When I flipped through the one volume I saw, it didn't really look much different than a regular Star Trek comic book (which I usually avoid).  It just had the manga-style art but no other aspects of the culture.  It kind of felt like they were trying to make it a manga in order to appeal to the manga-reading crowd.

Mania has posted that a "best of" edition of the original manga will be published on March 17 along with 16 colorized pages of "Side Effects."  The book jacket will also turn into a poster by the awesome Art Adams.  The stories were picked by the fans on  It will also include:
"Side Effects," "Orphans," and "'Til Death" (Shinsei Shinsei): "Forging Alliances" and "Communications Breakdown" (Kakan ni Shinkou): and "Art of War," "The Humanitarian," and "Bandi" (Uchu). Also included is a forward by David Gerrold and a preview of Star Trek: The Next Generation manga.

Amazon lists it at 342 pages.  The list price is $19.99, but they're offering it for $13.59.  Doesn't seem too bad of a deal.  Even though I'm not that much into Star Trek, I am tempted to get this.  I just wonder if there's anything more to this than some nice art, is it just mediocre Star Trek stories with pretty pictures?

wow! That's a quite a big manga. I was once a Star Trek: Voyager fan but yeah it doesn't quite fit for its culture.

I picked up one of the early Tokyopop Star Trek mangas, but I wasn't very impressed. It was basically a regular Star Trek comic with manga-style art. Even as a Star Trek fan, I was disappointed.

Your mileage may vary, but I wouldn't recommend the series based on what I saw.

That was the impression I got.  Just regular (average) Star Trek stories dressed up in a manga package. Seems a little exploitive to me.

Picked it up, and then put it back down.

I also picked up one book last year.  It did just feel like the comic adaptions.  It was more like a black and white comic book rather than a manga.  It wasn't horrible.  I was a little disappointed.

I like the part when the alien gets shot with the phaser. He was all talkin' some mess about his planet and that phaser dropped like a sack 'o taters.

I bought the first one and I liked it. I never got around to buying the later ones, mainly because around the time they came out I ran into financial difficulties.
