A group of scouts hustle on their horses towards one Titan in a dense forest. The group splits into a decoy and an attack team. The men uses their Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear to attack the Titan's nape. Eren wakes up from a nightmare and notices Mikasa near his side. Mikasa asks Eren why is he crying. In town, Eren asks Mikasa to not tell anyone he cried. Then, Hannes asks Eren if Mikasa is mad at him. Eren notices that Hannes and his gang are drinking alcohol and yells at them to be more vigilant about the titans if they breach the wall. Hannes states that the Titans cannot climb over the 50 meters wall and that they are safe. Eren remarks that they are living in these walls like cattle. After Eren and Mikasa leave, Hannes realizes that Eren wants to join the Survey Corps. Mikasa asks Eren to reconsider his wishes.
When the bells ring, Eren grabs Mikasa, so he and she can meet the Survey Corps that return home. Eren smiles at one of the soldiers who looks away. Eren is shocked at the condition of the battered troops. Moses's mother asks one of the soldiers where her son is. The soldier gives Moses's mother a dismembered arm. Moses's mother grieves over her dead son, and she asks the soldier if Moses was useful. The soldier replies that his sacrifice was not in vain, but he states that he hasn't made any progress on obtaining information about the Titans. He blames himself for endangering his men. When one villager remarks how their taxes are wasted on the soldiers' failure, Eren hits the man with his stick. Mikasa pulls Eren away from the crowd. She asks him if he still wants to join the Survey Corps.
Arriving home, Carla welcomes her children home. She pinches Eren's ears when she notices he is lying and that Mikasa did most of the work. During lunch, Mikasa informs her parents that Eren wants to join the Survey Corps. When Carla tries to make Eren reconsider, Grisla asks Eren why. Eren replies that he wants to explore the world outside of these walls. Before Grisla leaves for his work, he tells Eren that he will show him his secrets in the basement. Carla tells Eren that it's stupid to join the Survey Corps. After Eren runs away, Carla asks Mikasa to look after Eren. Meanwhile, three boys beat up Armin for stating that the Titans will invade their hometown. Eren and Mikasa run to Armin's side. The three boys run away once they spot Mikasa. Later, Armin talks about how the government wants to keep people inside. Though, everyone is at peace since the walls haven't been breached for 100 years.
Suddenly, a crash is heard. The villagers watch as a Colossal Titan peeps its head over the 50 meter wall. The enormous titan kicks the wall. As a result, a hole in Wall Maria is exposed for the smaller Titans to invade Shiganshina District. The towns people run for their lives at the sight of the Titans. Eren runs towards his home to find his mother with Mikasa following him. Upon arriving home, Eren finds his mother trapped beneath the rubble. Carla urges them to run away and to leave her because her legs are crushed to the extent that she will be only holding them back. Eren desperately tries to lift the roof off Mikasa. Hannes arrives to slay the Titan that approaching Eren and his family. However, he stops after being intimidated by the Titan. Hannes rushes to grab Mikasa and Eren. Carla thanks Hannes and cries after they leave her. The Titan pulls Carla from the rubble and snaps Carla in half. Eren watches in horror as the Titan chomps his mother into pieces.
