Oh geez… this show had to go on and remind me of my bygone days as a Toys ‘R Us cashier. I actually don’t have too much to gripe about for that job - - it was fun enough for the season I worked there - - but I still had to smirk over the part where the kid rubes Kotetsu to buy that stuffed and overpriced thing. They didn’t go the extra mile for realism, though. Not once was Kotetsu pitched a warranty plan, solicited for a charity donation or asked if he wanted to get a company credit card to earn points on his next purchase.

Judging by the opener, I was expecting this to be another “Saturday Morning” episode. Visions of Kotetsu’s long weekend with his daughter and the resulting shenanigans filled my head. The whole thing practically wrote itself. I should’ve remembered that we’ll be on the other half of that tonalbeat for the next few episodes, so this was actually one of the (relatively) serious ones. And I’ve got to say… I like how this mecha-suit/mystery arsonist/snake clan conspiracy is coming together. “Ms. Ourobors” and her toady are colorful and macabre enough to fit right into Batman’s rogues gallery, and damn if their grandiose scheme wasn’t triggering (actually pleasant) memories of watching BATMAN FOREVER, summer ’95. I even started smelling Twizzlers, Reese’s Pieces and over-buttered popcorn.

Maybe it’s a little redundant to say that mad Mr. Jake Martinez looks like a villain out of a Western comic, but it’s the truth, and it’s actually something I’ve been meaning to comment on for a while. This is still immediately identifiable as an anime, but the art style still seems like it’s been intentionally altered to resemble the Western rendering style. The occasional red outlining’s seem like part of that. Maybe it’s just my imagination given the subject matter. Have any of you lunatics noticed this, too?

Watch this episode "The Calm Before the Storm" below, decide for yourself and then read my comments on the previous episode here.

I agree theirs a touch of western comic/cartoon style to some characters.Which is only fair .Many a comic artist has been insired by anime an manga.Show doesnt follow the cute episode then 3 serious then one cute style it mixes it up.An for me part of the charm is its saturday cartoon parts.

Yes theirs some predicatble things. But it does throw the feint ,every so often  to make it not  a clone show.An it gets better. One of the few shows i liked the pilot an it just kept getn better. The cutesy episodes are bit of a let down but like i keep saying it makes the darker parts feel much darker. But neither to me seem out of place.

Its predictable but it one of those moments you liked from comics and not silly cliches.

I think the CGI also contributes to the series looking more western. It is not typical for anime to use CGI models so blatantly. Gundam has started to use them more, but for anime in general, not so much.

I never really saw it that way though. Besides the lack of SD animated characters, the drawing style is heavily anime.

I just found this to be funny.
And  Jake Martinez=wait for him.
