As crowds gather in line to buy the Sword art Online game, Kirito reads leisurely about the video game. With Kirito's sister running off to her practice, Kirito wears his Nerve Gear and heads off into the virtual world of Sword Art Online. On floor 1, Kirito runs through the town where Klein calls Kirito. Klein asks Kirito to show him the ropes. Outside, Klein gets knocked by a pig, and Kirito reminds him that he does not feel pain. Kirito demonstrates the motion input by throwing the rock at the pig. As he fights with the pig a bit, Klein manages to slice through the pig. The two share a high five, and Klein asks him about skills. Kirito mentions this RPG has no magic. As the day ends, Klein remarks how this game is so amazing and how Kirito is lucky to get into the Beta testing. Kirito states that he will take one month to complete the floors. When Klein gets hungry, he tells Kirito that he will have to log out to eat. Then, Klein cannot find the log out button and thinks it's a bug in the system. He attempts to log out, and Kirito explains that they cannot remove the Nerve Gear since it prevents them from moving their physical bodies.

When the bell rings throughout the land, everyone is summon to the courtyard. Then, the world turns red, and a being forms from the blood seeping from the sky. It takes form of a robed giant who introduces himself as Akihiko Kayaba. Kayaba states that the lack of log out button is not a bug. Furthermore, he explains that if someone tries to remove the Nerve Gear, a transmitter inside the helmet will emit a powerful microwave that causes brain damage. When Klein asks if the power can be cut, Kirito states that the helmet has an internal battery. Then, Kayaba states that several people have attempted to remove the helmet which results in 213 causalities. When people refuse to believe, Kayaba reveals news blog to everyone. He informs everyone that there is no method to revive a player. When someone's HP falls down to zero, the person will die by the Nerve Gear's transmitter. He tells them that the only way to escape is to clear all hundred floors. Before he leaves, he informs everyone that he has given them a present, a mirror that changes the players' avatar to their real selves. Kayaba bids everyone good luck. Kirito stares at his bloody thumb as he accepts the truth. When a young girl (Silica) cries out, the crowd gets riled up. Kirito grabs Klein and tells him that they should go to the next village to get experience and supplies ahead of everyone.

Though, Klein declines Kirito's offer because he cannot leave his friends. He tells Kirito to go on ahead, and Kirito asks Klein to message him if he's in trouble. Before Kirito leaves, Klein remarks that Kirito is his type, and Kirito mentions that Klein's unkempt face suits him better. Kirito runs off screaming to the next village.
