The Vision of Escaflowne

"A Girl in Gaea"

Hitomi is, for all intents and purposes, an entirely normal girl. She's got her school friends, a crush on the track team captain, the only unusual trait about her is her penchant for fortune telling. Nothing sinister mind you, her predictions just tend to be very accurate. So, imagine her surprise when this "Normal" girl is suddenly in the middle of a battle between a dragon and a young warrior.

Despite her terror, she sees a vision of his death, and acts to prevent it. The warrior lives, but as a result, he accidentally transporters her back to his world, Gaea.

Gaea and the Mystic Moon

So, the story takes place on Gaea, which is actually a hidden moon of the planet earth. For reasons undisclosed (at that time) Gaea is invisible to Earth, and given their relatively low level of technology, they believe the Earth rotates around it, and call her the Mystic Moon. Beyond that, they have the impression that the Mystic Moon is a cursed place, and that misfortune follows everything related to it. Hitomi falls into that category, and often has to remember/forgets to hide her background.

Gaea is fantasy world, with technology both inferior and superior to our own. Several other races of intelligent, humanoid animals co-exist, as well as dragons. Flight is made possible by an incredibly dense, but magnetic element, that floats.
