Simple it didn't really deal with deep philosophical themes (al la eva) and move the needle (again like eva) of what anime can and should be. It was also overshadowed in all most every way (plot, characters, animation, music) by the movie version.

Sevrial things i could see to cause it not to be so fondly recalled.

1. Fox Kids Butcher job. Not to be confused with the Montreal Screw job.But as crappy. This was to this show as what Cartoon network did to Detective Conan ( Case Closed ) .

2. Many concepts took seriously .The tightrope walk between gender apeal maybe makes some of the conepts seem silly .Also im a bit dislextic an when i see the title i swear i see flowers in the name.Just a random thought their.Titles can kill just as much as the content.

3rd an probly the real cause avalibity.I had not heard of this show till Tom recomended it. Also both yall should consider many probly have never heard of Wizard magizine only the conventions at best.Also consider to that Wizard atricle compairng it to Star Wars may have hurt it as well.Cause if your a fan of something do you really want to go watch a "knock off"?Which i dont belive it was.

All that said i enjoyed the tv series an own it on dvd.Have not watched the movie nor really felt the want to.Would highly recomend the tv series.Odd thing is it feels like something that should be on fox but not butchered.

@zaldar: Anime movies tend to do just that. But i really have no want to see the movie .A alternate telling of a story i already like doesnt make me sqeel with joy.Continue the story. build upon it .Dont reconstruct it.

An the tv series did deal with fate which is a pretty deep philosophical theme.But its not a more deeply discused one .Tho it is used alot in fiction.

@Marshal Victory:

Hey, don't blame Fox Kids, it was Saban who did the Butcher job dub.

I feel so sorry for Escaflowne it got the 4kids One Piece treatment, a heavy edited version of an anime will always kill the popularity of a show

@Destinyheroknight: They played the same role as Montreal did in the Montreal Screw job.It was the place it happened.So the name fits. Also to be fair they did play a hand in what was broadcast.An dang it i forgot how One Piece was screwed over to.Read same thing on how it wasnt Fox fault as well.But again they have say on what they broadcast.

Actualy its worse.Think of it this way.Why would you broadcast someting thats to "localized" an have the same publisher who made it localized try to fit it to a foriegn market that is alien to them?

I dont put the whole blame on them.But they should take some of the blame.An i agree heavy edting kills shows. But im a fan of all the shows mentioned here despite the poor early dubs.Probably cause i prefer subs.

Escaflowne is one of the quintessential 90's anime classics, Like all of the best works of fantasy, it is All heart, and no cynicism,
Post by zaldar (1,340 posts) See mini bio Level 15

@Kino88: wow...would disagree with that as modern classics of fantasy - Babylon five, X-Files, Star Trek, Firefly, and Tron to name the non-anime ones, and Eva, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira to name the anime ones certainly were cynical...

Escaflowne is pretty far from under appreciated.

@Marshal Victory:

Sorry for replying so late

Anyway, Montreal is a place where the event happen. It not its fault that something bad happen there, Montreal didn't tell Vince to screw over Bret Hart (it would be the same if it was in LA). Fox kids only hand was giving Saban money to show the program, in hopes they can sell toys from it. The blame goes to Saban and the tv censorship, Saban didn't have backbone. Batman: The Animated Series was able to get away with a lot of stuff, because they have people who know how to get away with it, with Saban they just bow down to the censorship.

Because it cheap and they don't have to make a cartoon from scratch. Networks usually use Anime or other foreign shows to fill time slots. But hey, I can't really get that mad at them, they did got me into Anime.

Anyway, I prefer subs and dubs as long as the show is good and the dubs don't make my ears bleed

@Destinyheroknight: Np on lateness .Life has no pause button.

Ok who did Saban bow down to on the censorship?Who wanted it censored?Rather who wanted to twink it for a difrent audiance?An by no means are they inocent its their property .

Mostly i think were at agrement that networks dont need to do censorship/tweek the show for american audiance.If your story is solid the animation good ,people will watch.

So few shows i like dubed over subtitled.Cowboy Bebop being one fo the few dubs i love more than subtitles.Ghost in the Shell tv series slightly prefer the dubs.Rest is all subitles.Even with my poor english use, reading an comprihesion i genraly prefer subtitles.Just feel the over the top empotion of the original actors fits better than most deadpan wrognly directed dubs.

@Marshal Victory:

It was the FCC (I just forgot the name of it), they the ones who tell the companies what to censor and tweek. If the Networks was really tweeking it, it will be ten times worst

Well, the networks think people are dumb and they only care for the money.

I prefer both, because I like to focus on other things while I watching Anime. I can't really read if my eyes at somewhere else :)

@Destinyheroknight: Really? Wow was the rules tight then or what.Nothing in that series even remotly worse than whats on prime time network stuff now.Heck before this show we had Robotech an Voltron an it had blood.

Yeah i can understand on subs an dubs. But in genral i watch the anime partialy for the animation.Back before their was a fox was a network the local vhf stations would play Robotech.Brother used to record it for me when i was in school an id come home an watch the show on vhs then rewind it an watch in slow motion to see how they did it frame by frame.

@Marshal Victory:

Yeah, in the Spider-man cartoon, Spidey can't even throw a punch at a bad guy and they can't say the word die or kill.

When I was a kid I watch raw anime, I didn't know what was going on, I just make up the story LOL! That was the good old times
