I agree that anime can be too insular nowadays, though I also feel its a bit of a give and take, on one hand having this Sort of "Otaku" tree house to play in we're no one can bother us Is Pretty sweet, anime definitely benefits from having auteurs' Who do whatever the hell they want and I'm always all for that, However ironically, if anything can threaten that same Creativity It may be the Otaku themselves, after all it's that same fan base that Screams for more Fanservice, which in turn puts pressure on the artist To deliver atleast a morceal of that T and A, and often much more, In that sense the fans themselves become a kind of committee for the Industry and the freedom is lost...., I believe that is what Miyazaki was Referring to, and I agree.

The only aspect of anime that truly creeps me out is when they start introducing sexual tension between siblings, or straight up incest. I can take all the fan service in the world, as long as it doesn't become the only thing the series has to offer. But I just can't stomach anime that portray siblings(usually half sibblings, though) having that level of sexual contact. I know that Japan has this weird attraction toward "forbidden love", and that is why they throw it in, so I guess it's just another instance of different cultures.

Aside from incest, the only other major part of anime that creeps me out is when they portray a seemingly older looking girl in a skimpy outfit, like Sailor Moon and Yoko Littner, and then say that they are 13 years old. I mean, come on, what 13 year old has boobs the size of Yoko's! I almost feel that with this theme at least, it might just be the Japanese trolling the viewers.

Besides those two themes though, there isn't much that creeps me out about anime. As long as I know the genre of the anime that I am watching and know if it's primarily ecchi, like To Love Ru, then I know what I am getting into. So yeah, if they properly label it, it's fine imo.

I think plenty of non-fanservice shows come out. I don't know what percentage will make people satisfied. To me it's no different than US TV where I'm lucky to find even 2 shows per season that are worth watching.

Anyways, not much bothers me in anime. Fanservice on young minors (like middle school and lower) used to bother me but I'm pretty desensitized to it and it's chalked up as that's anime for you in my book. Plus, those types of shows usually don't show up on my radar. I don't really watch ecchi stuff where fanservice is the entire point of the show anymore.

I'll say this though, random fanservice does bother me. Like a show that's not fanservice but then throws it in like, well we've gotta have some service in here even if it doesn't make sense and is out of the blue. I hate that. I'm watching Saki and they do that. That annoys me. It's a show about mahjong and it's actually really good when it's being about mahjong but they add these goofball upskirt shots every now and then that seem like someone made the episode and then some producer saw it and was like, whoa whoa, great stuff here but I counted zero upskirts. You gotta fix that or I'm not sending it to the network.

For me, anime that sexualize children as I had to put up with for Kodomo no Jikan last month. As much as I've been desensitized to incest, heavy loads of ecchi content and ultra-violent stuff in anime, I still get creepy vibes seeing anime sexually exploit child characters for some part of the otaku fanbase I don't want to be acquainted with.

If I remember correctly, the context of the Miyazaki's comment was directed against the art direction otaku take. It was something along the lines of "We have people who don't like looking at people drawing people!" His disturbing views on potential mental illness aside, an easy rebuttal would be to ask him how many forest gods he's seen prior to Princess Mononoke?

I'm trying to think if I've ever stopped watching a show because I've been disturbed by it. I know that I have because I got bored *cough* TRIGUN *cough*. I really enjoy surrealism and post-modernism. So I guess I enjoy feeling uncomfortable. More over, I tend to lean into weirdness. For example, the Nisemonogatari's toothbrush scene is brilliant. I show my friend's that episode every chance I get.

@Vapovile:

It's more like that we don't look down on incest between cousins. That's my culture. For siblings, it's look down in most countries. Don't know about Japan. Like I said in the Recently My Sister is Unusual Discussion, the little sister is associated with virtues that an ideal woman has:

Being nurturing, innocent, and pure.

I could be wrong. I remember from the Japanese Idols & American Celebrities: Similarities & Differences blog I did for Kelleth and the community.

@takashichea: Well personally, I still look down on incest between cousins, but different cultures like yours don't look down on it, so I won't judge that. It's just that incest with siblings in particular just creeps me out because they represent those values that you mentioned; innocent and pure, at least that's the case in young girls. If I see a little girl in an anime (middle school and below) dressed in a provocative outfit or subjected to sexual behavior, I view it as forcibly taking away that innocence and exposing them to a world that they aren't mature enough to deal with yet. And in the case of the incest, that just makes it worse, as it would make the brother the one who destroys that innocence, when a brother's primary job imo is to help protect them from that until the are old enough to deal with sexual issues.

That's how I view it anyway. Again, this is just coming from a guy who grew up here in America, so I don't exactly have some of the values of the Japanese.

@Vapovile:

I understand. It's a cultural and personal thing. To be honest, I never saw cousin incest to be a problem. Others find me strange when I mentioned in high school about my cultures. They saw me as a backwater bumpkin.

Anyways, the sibling thing in Japan is overexaggerated and exploited for forbidden love fan service like you had mentioned. I never thought about the forbidden love fetish thing.

Siblings don't do that crap. When I saw Oreimo, I wonder if folks had that desire in them. So far in shows I watched, there are two girls (Kirino from Oreimo and that girl from Witch Craft Works) who are abnormally attached to their sisters and countless guys who gets off being called "Onii-chan."

@takashichea: Then I guess you wouldn't want to bother with Nisemonogatari then. :P
