Probably a differentiators between super robots and real robots that is easier to grasp for people those new to the genre, and also encapsulates the overall themes of the show: super robot shows treat their robots as super heroes while real robot shows treat their robots as traditional military weapons.

Feel free to put the academic hat on often as possible! May go back to the nuclear bomb (to be generic) humans are always bad so we go somewhere else. Or they did like technology and embrace it to a much larger extent after world war II even than we did. There probably is a good article or two though in why they loved giant robots so much...may go back to giant monsters actually as that did come first.

There are definitely heroes who are machines in American comics, but they haven't really gotten out of the C/D list. I'm thinking characters like Red Tornado and Machine Man. I think the biggest android hero would probably be The Vision.

I read a very recent article about giant robots in comics. It tends to be that when you find a giant robot or mecha in comics, it's usually inspired by Japanese cartoons/comics. It's just an evolution of storytelling where Japan decided to accept certain types of heroes, while America took it in another direction.
