Tom at no point did Shinichiro Watanabe bill this as the crossover introduction to anime for America. That hat was put on by others expectations! Which i posted before was not his intention.

Also your friend need to tell the girl friend how many themes an genes they are in anime. If she thinks all anime is henti then he needs to fix that asap. An no Space☆Dandy is not henti ,hell it could pass as R or even Pg-13. Its in same catagory as Dude, Where's My Car?

Sam good points. Very diplomatic. An no its not sexy. Looney Tunes type over the top animation is not sexy for me in the least. But I apreciate effort in animation an illustration. Women are always harder to draw for me, so even over the top stuff I wonder on how they do proportions.

Also their is no "White Knight" its just opinion. To say what t&a that is in this is evil is ohh bit over dramatic. But then I can not make the case yet that it is part of the show for a reason. As hinted by some of the production people.

Honestly I never want to see Anime go mainstream, Mainstream appeal is what destroyed the video game Industry, There is nothing wrong with Anime being a niche, if loving something That not everyone else gets makes me a creep, then that's just fine, Mass appeal can only ever diminish the liberating art house bravado And genre bending that Anime dose so well, I'm not saying all that "T and A" stuff is needed, not at all, But I won't lose any sleep if the "norms" are disgusted by this show, While at the same time praising The Wolf of Wall Street,

@Kino88: If you get away from consoles the game industry is alive in pc realm. Idependant devlopers still have many great an creative titles.

An on reflection I agree somewhat. When you try for main stream apeal is when the watering down happens. No where did Shinichiro Watanabe say that was his goals with this show. Only that he wanted to do something difrent more comedy centric. Honestly people should be pointed to his past work other than this title if thats what you want . Tom's friend should show his girlfriend Kids on the Slope.

The first thing that I though when I saw the show was, "Holy crap, my wish for a Redline TV series has come true." The first portion of the first episode was a hilarious spoof of the TNA normally present in anime to satisfy the otaku crowd. Going from there, it is exactly what I want in anime: irreverence, fun, splashy colors, and a setting/narrative impossible in any other medium. Maybe it's my age, early 20s, but this is exactly the type of anachronistic show that makes me love the great medium of anime.

I'm indifferent to fan service, but if they force it, I probably turn off the show like Yu Sibu and Highschool of the Dead. I do enjoy Space Dandy and Highschool of the Dead, but both are trying to make it okay that T & A are okay. Plus, it reinforces negative stereotypes of anime that might scare off new fans of anime.

It was great for Toonami to do a dub on it around the same time with the sub just to increase the popularity of the show. Toonami has been criticized as useless because the shows they air are shows that you can see on HULU (dub) or Crunchyroll (sub). You don't have to wait for these shows. I do agree with the risks on rushing it because a few folks were noting that the dub made some mistakes in the translation (see Space Dandy Discussion).

As for mainstream, I do agree with @Marshal Victory: @Kino88: on the consequences, but if they expand, the simulcast companies and others will reach more countries. This will stop piracy. I have friends in this community, Katmic from Uganda, MohsinMan99 from India, Hal from the Caribbean, folks from Canada (Toonami isn't available in Canada), and others from Latin America, that they cannot watch anime legally. It's because anime is such a niche that you can only access online.

@Kino88: So not sure where the hatred for wolf on wall street came from but good movies still exist most of the oscar winning shows are actually pretty good. The location and the exposure was what made people think this was going to be a crossover and don't forget the power of economics. Anime will only exist as long as it is profitable. Making it more mainstream can only make it more profitable and the good stuff will continue to exist - art house movies are still made and fill many a film festival.

@zaldar: Ok try this shorter version. Making it more avaliable would work. Making it more mainstream does water down the product.

Look at how other anime over the years were "mainstreamed" an it hurt them here in the states. From Dective Conan to One Piece they all got mainstreamed for here an it hurt them here.

The only thing that should be mainstremed is the idea that animation is not just for kids. Once that fact sinks in then as a valid entertainment medium. Also think to how many times a comic or book gets a movie "adaption" it was mainstreamed for the masses an it fails.

@Marshal Victory: I don't want to turn this into a good taste/ bad taste argument. I just think that in my case, my being young and nihilistic helps me enjoy the show. If I had a girlfriend I don't know if Space Dandy is the first thing that I would show her. . . scratch that, the first thing I would show her would be Redline. If she doesn't dig that, then GTFO.

@NickyCharisma: Well taste like art is just opinion any way. Was just agreeing with ya about the show. But I do disagree on the age thing. Age may afect opinion by peer presure but i doubt thats the case here. Like i said im 42 an enjoy this show for all the reasons you listed. Actualy your as old as you feel, so really i feel about 142.

Granted the idea that animation is not just for kids needs to change. If what people think of as anime though only is sex, drugs, and violence the market will never grow and the market growing is a good thing as it will give more for us to enjoy and help the people who make it in Japan survive. The stage this is getting means that many more people will see it than normal and a chance for the perception of anime had a chance to change. This would have been a good thing. Granted I think the idea that simply an upskirt shot is the line is rather funny (given all the stuff that is out there).
