Oh lord....trolling for hits now are we? Going to wait until after my exams are over (after the 13th) to get a look at this...but positive I am going to disagree extremely. So I guess your "guest" didn't like the second ghost in the shell movie, the philosophy in Gurran, or C either...?

I'm not a fan of it either. It seemed like a bunch of jokes and gags that aren't funny and characters that aren't particularly interesting, with the only good thing being animation quality, which I can get by watching an amv if the series. Hearing that it delves into anime philosobabble doesn't win it any points in my book either.

The thing is that this show is overhyped. When you have high expectations, of course you will be disappointed at some point.

I agree with a lot in what he's saying, but I think I'm going to keep watching. To be honest I find Kill la Kill's political commentary, as I have stated on multiple occasions to be clunky and not entirely compelling. Another issues is that the show tries to posture itself as being able to invert tropes or at least electrify archetypes of the medium and genre. The problem is that almost all of the secondary cast is limited to two dimensional rehashes of said established tropes and archetypes. Sure you have an arc here and there for the Elite Four, but the arcs are tenuous and fleeting at best. Next you have the thorny issue of Kill la Kill trying to convey a message. Dealing with complex issues such as totalitarianism, commercialism, and the ills of capitalism requires tact and skill. Unfortunately the writing staff at Trigger have proven on every occasion on Kill la Kill that they lack both of these attributes.

Then you have the shows gravitation towards tournaments which I personally hate. The big problem with tournament arcs is that they take forever to convey a foregone conclusion. You know the protagonist is going to win because there is no room for error. You win or lose, and losing means that the story stops and the show can't continue, thus the protagonist MUST win. You as the viewer go into every single conflict and battle knowing this which deflates the entire experience. Ever single victory is assured because every single victory must happen. It's plot by convenience and not plot by entertainment nor originality.

So why continue watching? Because Trigger is going to "flip the switch" for this show eventually and I want to see it happen.

I seen a lot of deep and subtle insight beneath the silly, shonen fights padded with lots of T & A. I'm still waiting for that crazy theory I proposed a while ago. Kamui Uniforms are a race of aliens who disguise themselves as clothes, and former enemies unite to beat it. Looking at Fooly Cooly and Gurren Lagann, it probably won't happened. From the Monster of the Week trope to tournament trope, I was hoping Kill la Kill would do something different, wow us. I guess I had too much expectations. I enjoyed this show more than Attack on Titan but less than Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. Though, Gargantia tried using T & A to promote its BD, DVD, manga, and OVAs. I haven't seen Kruger's story. I hope it's good. For Kill la Kill, it needs to hit that universal level.

I still enjoy it (even though, I only saw five episodes)
