Young Perrine travels with her father around Bosnia, where he is a photographer. After his death, Perrine and her mother are forced to move to France, making ends meet with their own photo business, until Perrine's mother also dies. Perrine continues on the journey with only her dog, Baron, for company, heading for the mansion of her rich grandfather Bilfranc. He turns out to be a cruel man, and instead of announcing herself, Perrine takes a job as a humble worker in his string factory. After many trials of cruelty, he comes to trust Perrine, appointing her as his interpreter and awaiting a fairy-tale ending where she reveals that she has been his granddaughter all along.

Another entry in the World Masterpiece Theater series, this family anime was based on an 1893 novel by Hector Malot and is not to be confused with the 1996 sex-change remake of his earlier Nobody's Boy. Since Malot's original begins with the death of Perrine's mother, all that precedes it in the above synopsis is the creation of scriptwriter Akira Miyazaki. This was a first-time collaboration between writer Miyazaki and Hiroshi Saito, who would become stalwarts of the WMT franchise in the absence of an "old guard," such as Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, who had gone on to better things. Their next entry in the series would be Tom Sawyer.
