Overview

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya focuses on a girl called Haruhi Suzumiya, and a group she makes called the S.O.S Brigade that basically aims to do whatever Haruhi tells them to do. The secret is that she has the power to alter the universe at will, so if she isn't kept happy, the world could be destroyed... or worse. So, alongside Mikuru, a time traveler, Yuki, an alien, Itsuki, an Esper, and Kyon, the average guy who was roped into this entire mess, Haruhi goes about, trying to get her way and find fun things to do. It is, overall, a comedy, although the contents of each episode are generally a pastiche of various genres such as murder mystery and science-fiction.

Characters

Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮 ハルヒ)

The head of the S.O.S. Brigade, she has the ability to rearrange the world at will, except that she's unaware of her ability. Haruhi is loud, imperious, and demanding, and always drags the S.O.S. Brigade into all her weird schemes. Still, she can be sympathetic if she chooses to be, and is skilled in many things, but gets bored easily.

Kyon (キョン)

Kyon is just your average student, until he made the choice to talk to Haruhi about her eccentricities and unintentionally inspire the creation of the S.O.S. Brigade. Now he's a member of her S.O.S. Brigade, and knows the secret identities of the other members, as well as the secrets of Haruhi's powers. He's a cynical, sarcastic guy who loves nothing more than to make fun of Haruhi and her schemes, but even with this he constantly assists her, albeit with much grumbling.

Mikuru Asahina (朝比奈 みくる)

Mikuru is a time traveler from the future, sent to discover the source of an anomaly in time dated to the time of Haruhi Suzumiya's high school years. She's a timid, sweet natured, red-haired girl, and the most likely subject for Haruhi's cruelties. She is often groped, batted around, or otherwise mistreated by Haruhi, which forces Kyon to step in and help her.

Yuki Nagato (長門 有希)

Yuki is an alien, sent on the behalf of the Data Overmind to gather intelligence on the anomaly known as Haruhi Suzumiya. She doesn't often speak, but when she does she delivers her lines in a flat, deadpan or matter-of-fact tone of voice. Yuki also has a seemingly blank personality, and tends to spend most of her time reading.

Itsuki Koizumi

An Esper enlisted by The Agency, an organization which is tasked with dealing with any disturbances caused by Haruhi. His main duty is to protect Haruhi and ensure that she doesn't do any harm, and his organization has the belief that Haruhi's powers are " god-like". Itsuki is very friendly, as well as good looking, although he often acts as Haruhi's "Yes Man", meaning that he affirms all her actions and does his best to appease her.
