Who Is God?

The central conceit of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is that the title character is, unbeknownst to her, endowed with the ability to reshape the world as she sees fit. The other characters in the series are there to observe her, to clean up after her, or to prevent her from changing things.

But some fans have come to the conclusion that it is not Haruhi who is god, but Kyon. The novels are narrated by Kyon, and he opens the series by talking about how boring life is once you've gotten over Santa Claus and aliens and the like.

In the end, it is Kyon's life, not Haruhi's, that becomes interesting due to the people she subconsciously gathers around her and due to her own powers. On top of that, Kyon is suddenly surrounded by three very attractive young women, all of whom have a certain fondness for or trust in him.

It has never been addressed in the novels, but it's not hard to see why some fans think that Kyon is actually god, and he subconsciously created Haruhi as a front to cause the adventures to be and deflect responsibility for any problems away from Kyon.

What do you think?

I DID A PODCAST ON THIS GIA I AM EXPERT, oh wait you were there.

Anyway, I do think that Haruhi is... the current god and all that happens happens because of her subconscious will, but I think it was Kyon who somehow granted her the ability, or powers if you will, to subconsciously change things.

I lean towards thinking Kyon is God, but it may just be a big coincidence. It's hard to tell if the "hints" we receive throughout the novels are a conscious decision by the author or if we're just seeing things that aren't there...

I think , at this point, he might've not intended Kyon to be any sort of god, but because the idea came up... he might've went with it.

Or maybe it was Kyon's imouto all along... Dun dun dun.

In before it was Kyonko.

Kyon having those powers subconsciously would explain why he is surprised by the events that he becomes involved in, some (Mikuru) which he views more favorably than others (Ryoko) in his conscious mind.

I wouldn't rule it out (and it would certainly take Haruhi down a notch, if indeed the case) but then what powers does Kyon possess that Haruhi does not in terms of altering the reality of their world?

B-b-b-but then what shall I do with my Haruhi shrine?!

Do some video editing and call it a Kyonko shrine. Actually, I'd do that right now, regardless of who has the God powers.

Well...I still think it's Haruhi that is god even if Kyon is the main character who subconsciously gets what he actually wanted in real life.

Ugh, it's really hard to say. Hopefully it will unfold in the plot later
