On April 1st, 2007, the ninth volume of the Haruhi Suzumiya series, titled Suzumiya Haruhi no Bunretsu (The Division of Haruhi Suzumiya) was released to the general public, featuring new characters and other exciting developments in the world where Haruhi is an oblivious god and her companions Kyon, Asahina, Koizumi, and Yuki attempt to keep the world in its usual shape without letting Haruhi know about her powers.
The 9th volume was not a complete set of stories, however, as past volumes. Which would have been fine, had the 10th book come out in about a year, which was the longest Haruhi fans had ever had to wait for a new volume. But alas, it didn't. To this day the 10th volume, titled Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyougaku (The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya), has not been released. Which is really a shame since they probably missed the peak of Haruhiism.
But fans have been patient and word from The Sneaker, the Kadokawa magazine that serializes the novel, announced that the tenth novel will finally hit bookshelves this year. According to Haruhi author Nagaru Tanigawa, about 75-80% of the book is finished.
There's been some buzz on 4chan about the book, including some descriptions that supposedly came from 2ch based on first-chapter readings. They seem plausible, so I'm going to include them under a spoiler tag, but bear in mind that I can't even confirm for sure that this was actually on 2ch, or that what would have been posted there was accurate. much less that the translation is correct. So take it with a grain of salt, and bear in mind that if you're only familiar with the anime, you won't know some of these characters!
Of course, fans in North America are only up to two Haruhi volumes-- the third, The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya, is due out this July --so we've got a lot of waiting to do. Sigh.
