Blonde Marina, the youngest of six mermaid sisters, falls in love with the handsome human Prince Fritz when she sees him one night passing overhead in a boat. The boat is swamped by a large wave, and Marina rescues the man she adores, nursing Fritz back to health with an array of magical potions. He falls in love with her, but if she is to be with him on land, she must lose her tail and her beautiful voice.

The most famous of the Tales of Hans Christian Andersen, LM was animated to celebrate the centenary of its author's death-bracketed at both ends by live-action footage of Denmark shot by Henning Christiansen. The story was remade in 1995 as a 21-minute fully computer-animated version based on a retelling published by the children's illustrator Chihiro Iwasaki. Little Mermaid (1985) was an unrelated three-part collection of pornographic vignettes in the tradition of Lolita Anime. See also Video Picture Book.
