No, Korra, don't jump! You have to teach me what routine you use for those fabulous shoulders first!

We and every other reviewer out there have beaten the ever living hell out of the cinematic incompetence that is M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender already, so I won't tie that mess into this news except to say that we know for sure now that at least there's a future for the animated side of that franchise. Nickelodeon announced yesterday that Avatar: The Last Airbender will get a sequel and it will be helmed by the show's creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The show's working title is The Legend of Korra and is intended as a direct sequel (no alternate timelines or anything) seventy years after the events of the first series and...

...follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

Awesome news for fans of the series as well as quality animation as a whole. The new series won't be ready for broadcast until sometime in 2011, but I say take your time and wait until it's a work to be proud of.

OHHHHHHHH.. as much as I wasn't a huge fan of the origional this has me very interested. I know a good story when i see/hear one, never would I deny that of A:TLA so I know this will do a good job, and hopefully better than the predecessor.

Enjoyed the first series,
never saw the Live Action one (and don't plan to), and I am looking forward to seeing this one.
Hope they consider airing episodes online besides TV.

Excellent, now that movie won't be the last thing that the series is known for. Way to keep the dream alive ^^

Groovy. Allows one to get the sour taste of live-action Avatar out of their mouth.

Sounds fun. I liked the series and haven't gotten around to seeing the movie yet: but I will sometime (and I don't need to hear any more hate). I want to know who Aang's wife was even though it's obvious. When Korra enters the Avatar State will she see Aang? Many questions to be answered.

I cant wait for this, I have a strong love for the Avatar cartoon and would love for anything else set in that universe.

EDIT: I am hoping that since this is, currently, called Avatar: The Legend of Korra (and in many regions the original is called Avatar: The Legend of Aang) that if the new series is popular then this could lead to more with different Avatar's. As long as it is still good then I will keep watching.

That looks great!! i always kinda wished they now embrace the steam punk a little bit more. I mean the first series showed that world heading that way so why not?
