The Land Where a Hero Once Lived - 英雄のいた国 (Eiyū no ita kuni)

Opening Theme-

"Rocks" by Hound Dog (Japan)

"Rise" by Jeremy Sweet and Ian Nickus (U.S. TV)

Tazuna is working on the bridge while Sakura stands on guard, protecting him. Naruto and Sasuke are still training. One of Tazuna's friends, Giichi, tells Tazuna that they should quit building the bridge. If they continue, Gato and his men will soon come after them and kill them. Tazuna says that they can stop working for today and that Giichi didn't have to come back the next day if he didn't want to. As the sun sets, Naruto and Sasuke are still in the forest training. They look at each other and Naruto tells himself that he will not lose to Sasuke.

Sakura and Tazuna go into the village shopping for food. Sakura sees how poor the village is because of Gatoh. Tazuna tells her that this is the reason why they need to build the bridge. It serves as a symbol of courage and hope and will allow the village to once again prosper.

Naruto and Sasuke continue to train. They watch each other, Naruto seeing how Sasuke still has energy, and Sasuke seeing how Naruto is progressing. Naruto recalls the tips that Sakura told him for the training and gets ready to climb. As he takes his first step, Sasuke surprises him by calling him, causing Naruto to fall. He then asks what Sakura told him earlier, but Naruto refuses to tell him.

Later, back at Tazuna's house, Team 7 and Tazuna's family are eating dinner. Naruto and Sasuke eat their food quickly and competitively, asking for more and throwing up afterwards, in order to get stronger. Once everyone is finished eating, Sakura notices a torn picture hanging on the wall. She asks about it, causing somewhat of a shock to the family. Tsunami tells her that the man who was torn out of the picture was her husband. Tazuna adds that he was once called the hero of the village. Inari leaves the room in silence. Kakashi then asks about what was going on between their family and Inari's father. Tazuna says that Inari's father was not related by blood, but he was very close to Inari, as if they were father and son. Inari first met his father three years ago. A group of kids ganged up on Inari and took his dog, Pochi. One of the boys wanted the dog for himself, but Inari told him that he would not give it to him. As a result, the boy threw the dog into the water. He then tells Inari to go save him. Inari walks closer to the water, looking at his dog. He tells himself that he wants to save him, but can't because he can't swim. The boy then kicks Inari into the water, who begins to drown. Inari calls out to Pochi for help. Pochi learns how to swim and swims to shore. Inari begins to sink into the ocean and goes unconscious. When he wakes up, he finds himself with a man who would become his father. The man saved Inari and tells him to eat the fish he was cooking. As he ate, Inari told the man what happened, but he said that it was because Inari try to save Pochi that he betrayed him. The man cheers Inari up and inspires him. From then on, the two became very close.

One day, there was a terrible storm and part of the village was flooding. One of the gates was opened by the rushing water and needed to be closed. In order to close it, someone would need to tie a rope at the end of it and close it, but anyone who would swim in the water would die. Inari's dad volunteered to go into the water and was able to close the gate. Later on, Gato and his men captured Inari's dad and began to beat him up, eventually breaking his arms. Gato later had him hanged and announced to the entire village that he was being put to death. Inari watched as his father was killed. He believed that he was a liar and that his death resulted in him breaking his promise to protect Inari and the people. This finally caused Inari and everyone else to become the way they are now. Naruto gets up from his seat and falls down from his fatigue. He stands up and tells everyone that he will prove that heroes do exist.
