"If there were a world made only of saints, men would probably refer to it as hell. Thus reads the diary of a monk Proteus, who meditated for 80 years before giving up on becoming a holy man." - Narrator
The GE999 is scheduled for a two week layover in the Kingdom of Repentance, a peaceful and clean planet that greets visitors traveling near its orbit with the sound of church bells ringing. When Tetsuro and Maetel land on the surface they are taken aback by the beauty and cleanliness of it all. While walking to their hotel, they come across the Conductor who has been given vacation leave. The three of them chat about the planet's beauty and all are impressed, but the Conductor says that the planet is a bit too perfect for his tastes. The three of them go their separate ways and shortly afterward the Conducter is mugged. Sensing that something is awry, Maetel rushes back to his location and finds him knocked out on the ground with all of his valuables stolen.
Having lost his hotel reservation card the Conductor decides to spend the rest of his vacation on the GE999, but Maetel and Tetsuro invite him to stay with them in their hotel room. The Conductor is thankful for their kindness and after a bit of pleading he agrees to the arrangement. Once at the hotel, the Conductor reports what happened to him to the authorities and the trio starts their dinner. In the midst of it, the receive a phone call asking for Maetel and Tetsuro to go to the information desk. The two leave the room and the Conductor decides to take a bath while they are out. On their way to the main desk, Tetsuro and Maetel fall through a trap door and are kidnapped by the Cleanliness Committee, an organization created for the purpose of protecting the pristine image of the planet. The Chief of the organization decides to wipe the memories of Tetsuro and Maetel and proceeds to strap them into a machine and begin the process. After it is done, the committee drops an unconscious Tetsuro and Maetel off in front of a building. When they awaken, Tetsuro is surprised that he still has his memories and Maetel tells him that she secretly gave him protection against the process.
Back at the hotel, the chief of the Cleanliness Committee sends G, a female assassin, to kill the Conductor. G seemingly gets the drop on him while he is taking a bath but the Conductor is able to hide and disarm her due to his body being invisible. With G defeated and restrained, the Conductor questions her and discovers that the Cleanliness Committee is behind the attempted assassination and that they are after Tetsuro and Maetel as well. When he hears this, the Conductor rushes off to rescue.
Meanwhile, Maetel and Tetsuro hail a taxi and begin to travel back to the hotel. Unbeknown to them, the driver of the taxi is actually a Cleanliness Committee member named B who has been sent to check on him. An audio bug is in the vehicle and B as well as the Chief overhear Tetsuro talking about how the memory erasing procedure was a failure. When the Chief hears this he gives the order for a fighter pilot to be sent to destroy the taxi. The fighter attacks the taxi cab but Tetsuro and Maetel are able to escape the vehicle before it explodes. B wasn't as lucky. With the fighter looming in on them, Maetel covers Tetsuro to try and save him but luckily the Conductor arrives and shoots down the fighter using an anti-matter gun. Afterward, the three head back to the GE999 and board it. As the train is preparing to leave, the Chief appears and tries to use trickery to get Maetel and Tetsuro to come exit the train due to it being protected by various laws that make any violence committed while aboard a serious intergalactic offense. Tetsuro and Maetel refuse to exit the plane and it takes off.
