King Kong is a giant ape who lives on an island in the Java Sea. Bobby Bond, whose father is a professor studying the island, meets King Kong and befriends him. Bond father and son cooperate to protect King Kong from the evil Dr. Who, although the large creature can more than hold his own in a fight.

Commissioned by Rankin/Bass from the U.S. company Videocraft, which in turn farmed out the work to Toei in Japan, King Kong was the first "anime" to be made specifically for the American market. Though Toei was funding part of it themselves and eventually showed it in Japan, the designs, scripts, storyboards, and voice track were all supplied ready-made from the U.S. As with the American version, episodes of KK bookended a single episode of Tom of T.H.U.M.B. to comprise a half-hour show.
