Early in the morning in Meiji Tokyo, Himura Kenshin, a wandering swordsman (rurouni), is accosted by Kamiya Kaoru. She thinks he is the serial killer Hitokiri Battousai who has been killing people unrestrained. Ironically he is the Hitokiri Battousai, but is not the person who is killing. The man impersonating the Battousai is Hiruma Gohei, an ex-student who was kicked out of Kaoru's father's Kamiya Kasshin Ryu kendo dojo (now Kaoru's dojo since her father passed away). Gohei has been killing people using the name Hitokiri Battousai of "Kamiya Kasshin Ryu". His acts (for the purpose of revenge) are ruining Kaoru's dojo, and she is determined to stop him.
Gohei appears and attempts to attack Kaoru, but is stopped by Kenshin. Kenshin takes Kaoru home where he takes care of her wound and cooks her breakfast. Feeling sorry for Kenshin who appears poor, Kaoru invites Kenshin to stay at her dojo. Kenshin accidently walks in on Kaoru while she is having a bath, which makes her furious, so she locks Kenshin in a storage shed. Kenshin sneaks out shortly after being locked in, cleaning the building before leaving. When Kaoru opens it the next morning and finds it empty she thinks he has left for good. That same morning Gohei and his lackeys assail her dojo.
Just when Kaoru appears to be in serious trouble, Kenshin comes to her rescue. While fighting Gohei, Kenshin reveals that he is the real Hitokiri Battousai. Defeating Gohei, Kenshin begins to leave, but he is stopped by Kaoru, who tells him that he is at fault for everything and manages to get him to stay and help rebuild her dojo.
