The Oscaruhis?
The Oscaruhis?
The 2008 Oscar nominees are out, and the Best Animated Feature nominees? Wall-E, Bolt, and Kung-Fu Panda. It's really not all that surprising that no anime are on the list, but it's still a bit depressing: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was eligible-- films have to have had a 7+-day consecutive run in Los Angeles county between January 1 and December 31, 2008; TokiKake ran from June 13-19 at the ImaginAsian theater in LA. Mamoru Oshii's Sky Crawlers was also probably eligible...I can't find exact dates for it, but I know it ran in LA in December.

Well, at least next year we'll probably have Ponyo-- Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle both got nods, although only the former actually won. And besides, there was ONE Japanese animation nominated: Kunio Katou's Tsumiki no Ie (aka La Maison en Petits Cubes), in the Best Animated Short category.

Also of note: Yojiro Takita's Departures was nominated amongst the Foreign-Language Features. And, yes, Heath Ledger got nominated for Dark Knight.

Was about to say "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" should un-doubtably be there (2006 technically I know).
Rargh, it really should be there (as 'un-biased' as I am, I have see Wall-E & Kung-Fu P).

Zeo: The Japanese release date doesn't matter; only whether it ran in a theater for seven days in LA in 2008.

...That said, of the three up there, I vote Wall-E, hands down.

Anime always have a hard time at the Oscars. This year the writing is on the wall with Wall-E (/zing) and that there are only 3 nomination spots. I think the best chance to see a nomination for anime film is when there are 5 nomination slots (15+ eligible applicants).

They totally should've waited with Sky Crawlers, which IIRC applied to this year's Oscars. At least it looks like we'll definitely see a push for Ponyo in 2009-2010.

Eh.. this is something we already know. The Oscars really only care about the movies that the US makes, and got some "big" names in it.
