Maya Kitajima, at 13 years old, has had to endure many hardships. Her father is dead and her and her mother live above the Chinese restaurant where her mother works. Maya is generally believed to be a below average good-for-nothing. She's shy and clumsy and has never really demonstrated any talent at anything. She does, however, love TV drama and movies and is good at acting them out after she's seen them. One day, while Maya is acting out a TV drama for some children in a park, she is discovered by Chigusa Tsukikage, a former actress who has spent years searching for the perfect girl to play the lead role in a fictional play called "The Crimson Goddess." Tsukikage approaches Maya, believing she may have found what she's been looking for all these years, changing Maya's life forever.
